Served as military and judicial judge (1Sm 7). Warned people about the nature of a king (8:10-18; 10:25); anointed Saul (10:1); rejected Saul (13:11-14; 15:10-29). Anointed David (16:1-13); protected David from Saul (19:18-24). Death (25:1); appearance to Saul after death (28:3-19).
