Matthew 6:13
This Epistle bears the impress of its genuineness andauthenticity, which are corroborated by the most decisiveexternal evidence; and its Divine inspiration is attested by theexact accomplishment of the prediction which it containsrespecting the apostasy in the latter days. This prophecy issimilar in the general subject to that in the second Epistle tothe Thessalonians, though it differs in the particularcircumstances; and exactly corresponds with that of the prophetDaniel on the same subject, (Da 11:38.) This importantprediction might be more correctly rendered, "Now the Spiritspeaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shallapostatize from the faith, giving heed to erroneous spirits, anddoctrines concerning demons, through the hypocrisy of liars, having their consciences seared with a hot iron, forbidding tomarry, and commanding to abstain from meats," etc. Howapplicable these particulars are to the corruptions of theChurch of Rome need scarcely be insisted on. The worship ofsaints in that church is essentially the same with the worshipof demons among the heathen; which has been established in theworld by books forged in the name of the Apostles and saints, bylying legends of their lives, by false miracles ascribed totheir relics, and by fabulous dreams and relations; whilecelibacy was enjoined and practised under pretence of chastity, and abstinence under pretence of devotion. None but the SPIRITOF GOD could foresee and foretell these remarkable events.
