6 他 們 卻 說 ： 我 們 不 喝 酒 ； 因 為 我 們 先 祖 利 甲 的 兒 子 約 拿 達 曾 吩 咐 我 們 說 ： 你 們 與 你 們 的 子 孫 永 不 可 喝 酒 ，

Jeremiah 35:6

But they said, we will drink no wine
Or "we do not drink wine" ^F5; we are not used to it; we never do drink any; it is not lawful for us to do it; nor will we, let who will solicit us: for Jonadab the son of Rechab our father;
not their immediate father, but their progenitor; perhaps the same Jonadab is meant who lived in the times of Jehu, and rode with him in his chariot; by which it appears he was a man of note and figure, and who lived near three hundred years before this time, ( 2 Kings 10:15 ) ; which is more likely than that he should be a descendant of his, and the proper father of the present Rechabites, which is the opinion of Scaliger ^F6: commanded us, saying, ye shall drink no wine, [neither ye], nor your
sons, for ever;
as long as any of them were in the world. What was the reason of this command, and of what follows, is not easy to say; whether it was to prevent quarrels and contentions, luxury and sensuality; or to inure them to hardships; or to put them in remembrance that they were but strangers in the land in which they lived; or to retain them in the original course of life their ancestors had lived in, feeding cattle; be it what it will, these his sons thought themselves under obligations to observe it; and perhaps finding, by experience, it was for their good so to do.

4 領 到 耶 和 華 的 殿 ， 進 入 　 神 人 伊 基 大 利 的 兒 子 哈 難 眾 子 的 屋 子 。 那 屋 子 在 首 領 的 屋 子 旁 邊 ， 在 沙 龍 之 子 把 門 的 瑪 西 雅 屋 子 以 上 。

5 於 是 我 在 利 甲 族 人 面 前 設 擺 盛 滿 酒 的 碗 和 杯 ， 對 他 們 說 ： 請 你 們 喝 酒 。

6 他 們 卻 說 ： 我 們 不 喝 酒 ； 因 為 我 們 先 祖 利 甲 的 兒 子 約 拿 達 曾 吩 咐 我 們 說 ： 你 們 與 你 們 的 子 孫 永 不 可 喝 酒 ，

7 也 不 可 蓋 房 、 撒 種 、 栽 種 葡 萄 園 ， 但 一 生 的 年 日 要 住 帳 棚 ， 使 你 們 的 日 子 在 寄 居 之 地 得 以 延 長 。

8 凡 我 們 先 祖 利 甲 的 兒 子 約 拿 達 所 吩 咐 我 們 的 話 ， 我 們 都 聽 從 了 。 我 們 和 我 們 的 妻 子 兒 女 一 生 的 年 日 都 不 喝 酒 ，
