Then the fire of the Lord fell
An extraordinary fire from God out of heaven, as the effects of it show:

and consumed the burnt sacrifice;
as it had done in former instances, ( Leviticus 9:24 ) ( Judges 6:21 ) ( 1 Chronicles 21:26 ) ( 2 Chronicles 7:1 2 Chronicles 7:3 ) , and besides this, which is still more extraordinary,

and the wood, and the stones, and the dust;
of the altar, thereby signifying that even such were not to be used any more:

and licked up the water that was in the trench;
around the altar, see ( 1 Kings 18:32 ) .

36 Und es geschah zur Zeit, da man das Speisopfer opfert, da trat Elia, der Prophet, herzu und sprach: Jehova, Gott Abrahams, Isaaks und Israels! Heute werde kund, daß du Gott in Israel bist, und ich dein Knecht, und daß ich nach deinem Worte alles dieses getan habe.

37 Antworte mir, Jehova, antwortete mir, damit dieses Volk wisse, daß du, Jehova, Gott bist, und daß du ihr Herz zurückgewendet hast!

39 Und als das ganze Volk es sah, da fielen sie auf ihr Angesicht und sprachen: Jehova, er ist Gott! Jehova, er ist Gott! -

40 Und Elia sprach zu ihnen: Greifet die Propheten des Baal, keiner von ihnen entrinne! Und sie griffen sie; und Elia führte sie hinab an den Bach Kison und schlachtete sie daselbst.
