1 Und die Kinder Ruben und die Kinder Gad hatten viel Vieh, in gewaltiger Menge; und sie sahen das Land Jaser und das Land Gilead, und siehe, der Ort war ein Ort für Vieh.

2 Und die Kinder Gad und die Kinder Ruben kamen und sprachen zu Mose und zu Eleasar, dem Priester, und zu den Fürsten der Gemeinde und sagten:

3 Ataroth und Dibon und Jaser und Nimra und Hesbon und Elale und Sebam und Nebo und Beon,

4 das Land, welches Jehova vor der Gemeinde Israel geschlagen hat, ist ein Land für Vieh, und deine Knechte haben Vieh.

5 Und sie sprachen: Wenn wir Gnade in deinen Augen gefunden haben, so möge dieses Land deinen Knechten zum Eigentum gegeben werden; laß uns nicht über den Jordan ziehen!

6 Und Mose sprach zu den Kindern Gad und zu den Kindern Ruben: Sollen eure Brüder in den Streit ziehen, und ihr wollt hier bleiben?

7 Und warum wollt ihr das Herz der Kinder Israel davon abwendig machen, in das Land hinüber zu ziehen, welches Jehova ihnen gegeben hat?

8 So haben eure Väter getan, als ich sie von Kades-Barnea aussandte, das Land zu besehen:

9 sie zogen hinauf bis zum Tale Eskol und besahen das Land; und sie machten das Herz der Kinder Israel abwendig, daß sie nicht in das Land gingen, welches Jehova ihnen gegeben hatte.

10 Und der Zorn Jehovas entbrannte an jenem Tage, und er schwur und sprach:

11 Wenn die Männer, die aus Ägypten hinaufgezogen sind, von zwanzig Jahren und darüber, das Land sehen werden, das ich Abraham und Isaak und Jakob zugeschworen habe! Denn sie sind mir nicht völlig nachgefolgt;

12 ausgenommen Kaleb, der Sohn Jephunnes, der Kenisiter, und Josua, der Sohn Nuns; denn sie sind Jehova völlig nachgefolgt.

13 Und der Zorn Jehovas entbrannte wider Israel, und er ließ sie vierzig Jahre lang in der Wüste umherirren, bis das ganze Geschlecht aufgerieben war, welches getan hatte, was böse war in den Augen Jehovas.

14 Und siehe, ihr seid aufgestanden an eurer Väter Statt, eine Brut von sündigen Männern, um die Glut des Zornes Jehovas gegen Israel noch zu mehren.

15 Wenn ihr euch hinter ihm abwendet, so wird er es noch länger in der Wüste lassen, und ihr werdet dieses ganze Volk verderben.

16 Und sie traten zu ihm und sprachen: Kleinviehhürden wollen wir hier bauen für unsere Herden, und Städte für unsere Kinder;

17 wir selbst aber wollen uns eilends rüsten vor den Kindern Israel her, bis wir sie an ihren Ort gebracht haben; und unsere Kinder sollen in den festen Städten bleiben vor den Bewohnern des Landes.

18 Wir wollen nicht zu unseren Häusern zurückkehren, bis die Kinder Israel ein jeder sein Erbteil empfangen haben.

19 Denn wir wollen nicht mit ihnen erben jenseit des Jordan und weiterhin, denn unser Erbteil ist uns diesseit des Jordan gegen Sonnenaufgang zugekommen.

20 Da sprach Mose zu ihnen: Wenn ihr dieses tut, wenn ihr euch vor Jehova zum Streite rüstet,

21 und alle unter euch, die gerüstet sind, vor Jehova über den Jordan ziehen, bis er seine Feinde vor sich ausgetrieben hat,

22 und das Land vor Jehova unterjocht ist, und ihr danach zurückkehret, so sollt ihr schuldlos sein gegen Jehova und gegen Israel; und dieses Land soll euch zum Eigentum sein vor Jehova.

23 Wenn ihr aber nicht also tut, siehe, so habt ihr wider Jehova gesündigt; und wisset, daß eure Sünde euch finden wird.

24 Bauet euch Städte für eure Kinder und Hürden für euer Kleinvieh, und tut, was aus eurem Munde hervorgegangen ist.

25 Und die Kinder Gad und die Kinder Ruben sprachen zu Mose und sagten: Deine Knechte werden tun, so wie mein Herr gebietet.

26 Unsere Kinder, unsere Weiber, unsere Herden und all unser Vieh sollen daselbst in den Städten Gileads sein;

27 deine Knechte aber, alle zum Heere Gerüsteten, werden vor Jehova hinüberziehen in den Streit, so wie mein Herr redet.

28 Und Mose gebot ihrethalben Eleasar, dem Priester, und Josua, dem Sohne Nuns, und den Häuptern der Väter der Stämme der Kinder Israel;

29 und Mose sprach zu ihnen: Wenn die Kinder Gad und die Kinder Ruben, alle zum Streit Gerüsteten, mit euch vor Jehova über den Jordan ziehen, und das Land vor euch unterjocht sein wird, so sollt ihr ihnen das Land Gilead zum Eigentum geben;

30 wenn sie aber nicht gerüstet mit euch hinüberziehen, so sollen sie sich unter euch ansässig machen im Lande Kanaan.

31 Und die Kinder Gad und die Kinder Ruben antworteten und sprachen: Wie Jehova zu deinen Knechten geredet hat, so wollen wir tun.

32 Wir wollen gerüstet vor Jehova in das Land Kanaan hinüberziehen, und unser Erbbesitztum verbleibe uns diesseit des Jordan.

33 Und Mose gab ihnen, den Kindern Gad und den Kindern Ruben und der Hälfte des Stammes Manasse, des Sohnes Josephs, das Königreich Sihons, des Königs der Amoriter, und das Königreich Ogs, des Königs von Basan, das Land nach seinen Städten in ihren Grenzen, die Städte des Landes ringsum.

34 Und die Kinder Gad bauten Dibon und Ataroth und Aroer,

35 und Ateroth-Schofan und Jaser und Jogbeha,

36 und Beth-Nimra und Beth-Haran, feste Städte und Kleinviehhürden.

37 Und die Kinder Ruben bauten Hesbon und Elale und Kirjathaim,

38 und Nebo und Baal-Meon, deren Namen geändert wurden, und Sibma; und sie benannten die Städte, die sie bauten, mit anderen Namen. -

39 Und die Söhne Makirs, des Sohnes Manasses, zogen nach Gilead und nahmen es ein; und sie trieben die Amoriter, die darin wohnten, aus.

40 Und Mose gab Gilead dem Makir, dem Sohne Manasses; und er wohnte darin.

41 Und Jair, der Sohn Manasses, zog hin und nahm ihre Dörfer ein und nannte sie Dörfer Jairs.

42 Und Nobach zog hin und nahm Kenath und seine Tochterstädte ein und nannte es Nobach nach seinem Namen.

Numeri 32 Commentary

Chapter 32

The tribes of Reuben and Gad request an inheritance on the east of Jordan. (1-5) Moses reproves the Reubenites and Gadites. (6-15) They explain their views, Moses consents. (16-27) They take possession of the land to the east of Jordan. (28-42)

Verses 1-5 Here is a proposal made by the Reubenites and Gadites, that the land lately conquered might be allotted to them. Two things common in the world might lead these tribes to make this choice; the lust of the eye, and the pride of life. There was much amiss in the principle they went upon; they consulted their own private convenience more than the public good. Thus to the present time, many seek their own things more than the things of Jesus Christ; and are led by worldly interests and advantages to take up short of the heavenly Canaan.

Verses 6-15 The proposal showed disregard to the land of Canaan, distrust of the Lord's promise, and unwillingness to encounter the difficulties and dangers of conquering and driving out the inhabitants of that land. Moses is wroth with them. It will becomes any of God's Israel to sit down unconcerned about the difficult and perilous concerns of their brethren, whether public or personal. He reminds them of the fatal consequences of the unbelief and faint-heartedness of their fathers, when they were, as themselves, just ready to enter Canaan. If men considered as they ought what would be the end of sin, they would be afraid of the beginning of it.

Verses 16-27 Here is the good effect of plain dealing. Moses, by showing their sin, and the danger of it, brought them to their duty, without murmuring or disputing. All men ought to consider the interests of others as well as their own; the law of love requires us to labour, venture, or suffer for each other as there may be occasion. They propose that their men of war should go ready armed before the children of Israel into the land of Canaan, and that they should not return till the conquest of Canaan was ended. Moses grants their request, but he warns them of the danger of breaking their word. If you fail, you sin against the Lord, and not against your brethren only; God will certainly reckon with you for it. Be sure your sin will find you out. Sin will surely find out the sinner sooner or later. It concerns us now to find our sins out, that we may repent of them, and forsake them, lest they find us out to our ruin.

Verses 28-42 Concerning the settlement of these tribes, observe, that they built the cities, that is, repaired them. They changed the names of them; probably they were idolatrous, therefore they should be forgotten. A spirit of selfishness, of seeking our own, not the things of Christ, when each one ought to assist others, is as dangerous as it is common. It is impossible to be sincere in the faith, sensible of the goodness of God, constrained by the love of Christ, sanctified by the power of the Holy Ghost, and yet be indifferent to the progress of religion, and the spiritual success of others, through love of ease, or fear of conflict. Let then your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

INTRODUCTION TO NUMBERS 32

This chapter relates, how that the tribes of Gad and Reuben requested a settlement in the country of Jazer and Gilead, being fit for the pasturage of their cattle, Nu 32:1-5 at which Moses at first was very much displeased, as being unreasonable, and tending to discourage the rest of the people; and as acting a part like that their fathers had done before them, which brought the wrath of God upon them, so that they all but two perished in the wilderness; and this he suggests would be the case again, if such measures were taken, Nu 32:6-15 upon which they explain themselves, and declare they had no intention of forsaking their brethren, but were willing to leave their children and cattle to the care of divine Providence, and go armed before Israel, until they were brought into, and settled in the land of Canaan; nor did they desire any part or inheritance in it, Nu 32:16-19, this satisfied Moses, and he agreed to it, that the land they requested should be their possession, provided the conditions were fulfilled by them, which they proposed, Nu 20:20-24, and which they again agreed unto, and promised to perform, Nu 32:25-27, wherefore Moses gave orders to Eleazar, Joshua, and the chief fathers of the tribes, to put them in possession of the land of Gilead on those conditions, Nu 32:28-30 and which were again promised that they would observe, Nu 32:31,32, and at the same time Moses made a grant of the kingdoms of Sihon and of Og to the tribes of Reuben and Gad, and to half the tribe of Manasseh, Nu 32:33 and the chapter is closed with an account of the cities built or repaired by the children of Gad and Reuben, Nu 32:34-38 and of the cities in Gilead taken and possessed by the children of Machir, and by Jair, who were of the tribe of Manasseh, Nu 32:39-42.
