John 20:19-31

Listen to John 20:19-31

Jesus Appears to the Disciples

19 1On the evening 2of that day, the first day of the week, 3the doors being locked where the disciples were 4for fear of the Jews, [a] Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, 5ā€œPeace be with you. ā€
20 When he had said this, 6he showed them his hands and his side. Then 7the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord.
21 Jesus said to them again, ā€œPeace be with you. As 8the Father has sent me, 9even so I am sending you. ā€
22 And when he had said this, he 10breathed on them and said to them, 11ā€œReceive the Holy Spirit.
23 12If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you withhold forgiveness from any, it is withheld. ā€

Jesus and Thomas

24 Now 13Thomas, one of the Twelve, called the Twin, [b] was not with them when Jesus came.
25 So the other disciples told him, ā€œWe have seen the Lord. ā€ But he said to them, 14ā€œUnless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into his side, I will never believe. ā€
26 Eight days later, his disciples were inside again, and Thomas was with them. 15Although the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, 16ā€œPeace be with you. ā€
27 Then he said to Thomas, 17ā€œPut your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe. ā€
28 Thomas answered him, 18ā€œMy Lord and my God! ā€
29 Jesus said to him, ā€œHave you believed because you have seen me? 19Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed. ā€

The Purpose of This Book

30 20Now Jesus did many other signs 21in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book;
31 22but these are written so that you may 23believe that Jesus is the Christ, 24the Son of God, and that by believing 25you may have life 26in his name.
