1 Re 10:16 Meaning and Commentary

1 Kings 10:16

And King Solomon made two hundred targets of beaten gold,
&c.] Which were a larger sort of shields, which covered the whole body; and these were made of gold beaten with the hammer, or drawn into plates, being melted like wax; so the Poeni or Carthaginians made shields of gold F13:

six hundred shekels of gold went to one target;
which is to be understood not of the weight, but of the price or value of them, which amounted to four hundred and fifty pounds of our money; so Brerewood F14.

1 Re 10:16 In-Context

14 ORA il peso dell’oro, che veniva ogni anno a Salomone, era di seicensessantasei talenti d’oro;
15 oltre a quello che traeva da’ gabellieri, e dal traffico de’ mercatanti di spezierie, e da tutti i re dell’Arabia, e da’ principali signori del paese.
16 Onde il re Salomone fece fare dugento pavesi d’oro battuto, in ciascuno de’ quali impiegò siecento sicli d’oro;
17 e trecento scudi d’oro battuto, in ciascuno de’ quali impiegò tre mine d’oro. E il re li mise nella casa del bosco del Libano.
18 Il re fece, oltre a ciò, un gran trono d’avorio, il quale egli coperse d’oro fino.
