Acts 24:4

Notwithstanding, that I be not further tedious unto thee,
&c.] Suggesting, that he could say a great deal more under this head, but, for brevity sake, should omit it; and because he would not tire his patience, and hinder business going forward:

I pray thee, that thou wouldst hear us of thy clemency a few words;
he praises him for his humanity and good nature, and for his patience in hearing causes, and promises him great conciseness in the account he should give him; and entreats that, according to his wonted goodness, he would condescend to hear what he had to lay before him; all which was artfully said to engage attention to him.

2 Ed esso essendo stato chiamato, Tertullo cominciò ad accusarlo, dicendo:
3 Godendo per te di molta pace, ed essendo molti buoni ordini stati fatti da te a questa nazione, per lo tuo provvedimento, noi in tutto e per tutto lo riconosciamo con ogni ringraziamento, eccellentissimo Felice.
4 Or acciocchè io non ti dia più lungamente impaccio, io ti prego che secondo la tua equità, tu ascolti quello che abbiamo a dirti in breve.
5 Che è, che noi abbiam trovato quest’uomo essere una peste, e commuover sedizione fra tutti i Giudei che son per lo mondo, ed essere il capo della setta de’ Nazarei.
6 Il quale ha eziandio tentato di profanare il tempio; onde noi, presolo, lo volevam giudicare secondo la nostra legge.
