Luke 14:27

Whosoever doth not bear his cross
All reproach, afflictions, persecutions, and death itself, cheerfully and patiently; the Ethiopic version renders it, "of his death the cross"; it signifies whatever is trying and disagreeable to flesh and blood:

and come after me;
bearing his cross; as Christ himself was about to do, and which doubtless he had in view;

cannot be my disciple;
he is not so in reality, nor does he deserve the name.

25 OR molte turbe andavano con lui; ed egli, rivoltosi, disse loro:
26 Se alcuno viene a me, e non odia suo padre, e sua madre, e la moglie, e i figliuoli, e i fratelli, e le sorelle, anzi ancora la sua propria vita, non può esser mio discepolo.
27 E chiunque non porta la sua croce, e non vien dietro a me, non può esser mio discepolo.
28 Perciocchè, chi è colui d’infra voi, il quale, volendo edificare una torre, non si assetti prima, e non faccia ragion della spesa, se egli ha da poterla finire?
29 Che talora, avendo posto il fondamento, e non potendola finire, tutti coloro che la vedranno non prendano a beffarlo, dicendo:
