Of every tribe a thousand
So that the whole number of those that were armed were 12,000 as after given:

throughout all the tribes of Israel;
this is observed, as Jarchi thinks, to comprehend the tribe of Levi, which in some cases was left out of the account:

shall ye send to the war;
to fight with Midian.

2 Fa’ la vendetta de’ figliuoli d’Israele sopra i Madianiti; e poi tu sarai raccolto a’ tuoi popoli.

3 E Mosè parlò al popolo, dicendo: Mettasi in ordine un certo numero di voi, per andare alla guerra, e vadano contro a Madian, per far la vendetta del Signore sopra Madian.

4 Mandate a questa guerra mille uomini per ciascuna di tutte le tribù d’Israele.

5 Così furono dati mille uomini per ciascuna tribù, d’infra le migliaia d’Israele, che furono in tutto dodicimila uomini in ordine per la guerra.

6 E Mosè mandò alla guerra que’ mille uomini di ciascuna tribù, e con loro Finees, figliuolo del Sacerdote Eleazaro, il quale avea in mano gli arredi del Santuario, e le trombe da sonare.
