Ezekiel 21:5 Meaning and Commentary

Ezekiel 21:5

That all flesh may know that I the Lord have drawn forth my
sword out of his sheath
The same with kindling a fire in Judea, (See Gill on Ezekiel 20:48): it shall not return any more;
that is, into its sheath, until it has done all its work; meaning that the Chaldean army should not return to their own land until they had executed the whole will of God upon the Jews; this is the fire that should not be quenched, ( Ezekiel 20:48 ) and here ends the explanation of the said prophecy.

Ezekiel 21:5 In-Context

3 and tell Eretz-Yisra'el, Thus says the LORD: Behold, I am against you, and will draw forth my sword out of its sheath, and will cut off from you the righteous and the wicked.
4 Seeing then that I will cut off from you the righteous and the wicked, therefore shall my sword go forth out of its sheath against all flesh from the south to the north:
5 and all flesh shall know that I, the LORD, have drawn forth my sword out of its sheath; it shall not return any more.
6 Sigh therefore, you son of man; with the breaking of your loins and with bitterness shall you sigh before their eyes.
7 It shall be, when they tell you, Why do you sigh? that you shall say, Because of the news, for it comes; and every heart shall melt, and all hands shall be feeble, and every spirit shall faint, and all knees shall be weak as water: behold, it comes, and it shall be done, says the Lord GOD.
