2 Samuel 7

1 Y aconteció que, estando ya el rey asentado en su casa, después que el SEÑOR le había dado reposo de todos sus enemigos de alrededor

2 dijo el rey al profeta Natán: Mira ahora, yo moro en casas de cedro, y el arca de Dios está entre cortinas

3 Y Natán dijo al rey: Anda, y haz todo lo que está en tu corazón, que el SEÑOR está contigo

4 Y aconteció aquella noche, que vino palabra del SEÑOR a Natán, diciendo

5 Ve y di a mi siervo David: Así dijo el SEÑOR: ¿Tú me has de edificar casa en que yo more

6 Ciertamente no he habitado en casas desde el día que saqué a los hijos de Israel de Egipto hasta hoy, sino que he andado en tienda y en tabernáculo

7 Y en todo cuanto he andado con todos los hijos de Israel, ¿he hablado palabra en alguna de las tribus de Israel, a quien haya mandado que apaciente mi pueblo de Israel, para decir: ¿Por qué no me habéis edificado casa de cedros

8 Ahora pues, dirás así a mi siervo David: Así dijo el SEÑOR de los ejércitos: Yo te tomé de la majada, de detrás de las ovejas, para que fueras príncipe sobre mi pueblo, sobre Israel

9 y he estado contigo en todo cuanto has andado, y delante de ti he talado todos tus enemigos, y te he hecho nombre grande, como el nombre de los grandes que están en la tierra

10 Además yo pondré lugar a mi pueblo Israel, y yo lo plantaré, para que habite en su lugar, y nunca más sea removido, ni los hijos de la iniquidad le aflijan más, como antes

11 desde el día que puse jueces sobre mi pueblo Israel. Y yo te daré descanso de todos tus enemigos. Asimismo el SEÑOR te hace saber, que él te quiere hacer casa a ti

12 Y cuando tus días fueren cumplidos, y durmieres con tus padres, yo afirmaré tu simiente después de ti, la cual procederá de tus entrañas, y afirmaré su reino

13 El edificará casa a mi nombre, y yo afirmaré para siempre el trono de su reino

14 Yo le seré a él padre, y él me será a mí hijo. Y si él cometiere iniquidad, yo le castigaré con vara de hombres, y con azotes de hijos de hombres

15 pero mi misericordia no se apartará de él, como la aparté de Saúl, al cual quité de delante de ti

16 Y será afirmada tu casa y tu reino para siempre delante de tu rostro; y tu trono será firme eternalmente

17 Conforme a todas estas palabras, y conforme a toda esta visión, así habló Natán a David

18 Y entró el rey David, y se sentó delante del SEÑOR, y dijo: Señor DIOS, ¿Quién soy yo, y qué es mi casa, para que tú me traigas hasta aquí

19 Y aun te ha parecido poco esto, Señor DIOS, sino que hablas también de la casa de tu siervo en lo por venir, y que sea ésta la condición de un hombre, Señor DIOS

20 ¿Y qué más puede añadir David hablando contigo? Tú pues conoces a tu siervo, Señor DIOS

21 Todas estas grandezas has obrado por tu palabra y conforme a tu corazón, haciéndolas saber a tu siervo

22 Por tanto tú te has engrandecido, SEÑOR Dios; por cuanto no hay otro como tú, ni hay Dios fuera de ti, conforme a todo lo que hemos oído con nuestros oídos

23 ¿Y quién como tu pueblo, como Israel, en la tierra? Un gentil por amor del cual Dios fuera a redimírselo por pueblo, y le pusiera nombre, e hiciera con vosotros, grandes y espantosas obras en tu tierra, por causa de tu pueblo el que tú rescataste de Egipto, de los gentiles y de sus dioses

24 Porque tú has confirmado a tu pueblo Israel por pueblo tuyo para siempre; y tú, oh SEÑOR, fuiste a ellos por Dios

25 Ahora pues, SEÑOR Dios, la palabra que has hablado sobre tu siervo y sobre su casa, despiértala eternalmente, y haz conforme a lo que has dicho

26 Porque así será engrandecido tu nombre para siempre, para que se diga: El SEÑOR de los ejércitos es Dios sobre Israel; y que la casa de tu siervo David sea firme delante de ti

27 Porque tú, SEÑOR de los ejércitos, Dios de Israel, revelaste al oído de tu siervo, diciendo: Yo te edificaré casa. Por esto tu siervo ha hallado en su corazón para orar delante de ti esta oración

28 Ahora pues, SEÑOR Dios, tú eres Dios, y tus palabras serán firmes; pues has dicho a tu siervo este bien

29 Ahora pues, quiere, y bendice a la casa de tu siervo, para que perpetuamente permanezca delante de ti; pues que tú, el SEÑOR Dios, lo has dicho, y con tu bendición será bendita la casa de tu siervo para siempre

2 Samuel 7 Commentary

Chapter 7

David's care for the ark. (1-3) God's covenant with David. (4-17) His prayer and thanksgiving. (18-29)

Verses 1-3 David being at rest in his palace, considered how he might best employ his leisure and prosperity in the service of God. He formed a design to build a temple for the ark. Nathan here did not speak as a prophet, but as a godly man, encouraging David by his private judgment. We ought to do all we can to encourage and promote the good purposes and designs of others, and, as we have opportunity, to forward a good work.

Verses 4-17 Blessings are promised to the family and posterity of David. These promises relate to Solomon, David's immediate successor, and the royal line of Judah. But they also relate to Christ, who is often called David and the Son of David. To him God gave all power in heaven and earth, with authority to execute judgment. He was to build the gospel temple, a house for God's name; the spiritual temple of true believers, to be a habitation of God through the Spirit. The establishing of his house, his throne, and his kingdom for ever, can be applied to no other than to Christ and his kingdom: David's house and kingdom long since came to an end. The committing iniquity cannot be applied to the Messiah himself, but to his spiritual seed; true believers have infirmities, for which they must expect to be corrected, though they are not cast off.

Verses 18-29 David's prayer is full of the breathings of devout affection toward God. He had low thoughts of his own merits. All we have, must be looked upon as Divine gifts. He speaks very highly and honourably of the Lord's favours to him. Considering what the character and condition of man is, we may be amazed that God should deal with him as he does. The promise of Christ includes all; if the Lord God be ours, what more can we ask, or think of? ( Ephesians 3:20 ) . He knows us better than we know ourselves; therefore let us be satisfied with what he has done for us. What can we say more for ourselves in our prayers, than God has said for us in his promises? David ascribes all to the free grace of God. Both the great things He had done for him, and the great things He had made known to him. All was for his word's sake, that is, for the sake of Christ the eternal Word. Many, when they go to pray, have their hearts to seek, but David's heart was found, that is, it was fixed; gathered in from its wanderings, entirely engaged to the duty, and employed in it. That prayer which is from the tongue only, will not please God; it must be found in the heart; that must be lifted up and poured out before God. He builds his faith, and hopes to speed, upon the sureness of God's promise. David prays for the performance of the promise. With God, saying and doing are not two things, as they often are with men; God will do as he hath said. The promises of God are not made to us by name, as to David, but they belong to all who believe in Jesus Christ, and plead them in his name.

This chapter expresses David's concern for building an house for the ark of God, which he communicated to Nathan the prophet, and was approved of by him, 2Sa 7:1-3; and who was that night sent by the Lord to David, to acquaint him, that as he had for many years dwelt in a tent, and had never given directions to the tribes of Israel, and the rulers of them, to build him an house, so neither should David build him one; but his son that would succeed him in the throne should; and also observes to him the many great things he had done for him, and promises him more, and particularly the establishment of his throne and kingdom for ever, in which he has respect to the Messiah, that should spring from him, 2Sa 7:4-17. Then follows a prayer of David, in which he expresses the sense he had of the greatness and goodness of God, and of his own unworthiness to receive such favours from him he had, returns him thanks for the promises he had made, and prays for the performance of them, 2Sa 7:18-29.
