Mark 15:42 Meaning and Commentary

Mark 15:42

And now when the even was come
"Of the preparation", as the Syriac version reads; or "the night of the sixth day":, as the Persic version renders it, "Friday" night:

because it was the preparation;
of the passover, and of the sabbath, when they prepared their food, and got it ready for the ensuing sabbath, on which it was not lawful to dress any;

that is, the day before the sabbath;
that is, Friday; on which day, it is clear, Christ suffered, died, and was buried.

Mark 15:42 In-Context

40 There were also some women looking on afar off, among whom was Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James the lesser and of Joses, and Salome
41 (who also, when he was in Galilee, followed him and ministered unto him), and many other women who came up with him unto Jerusalem.
42 And now when the evening was come, because it was the preparation, that is, the day before the sabbath,
43 Joseph of Arimathaea, a noble senator, who also waited for the kingdom of God, came and went in boldly unto Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.
44 And Pilate marvelled that he was already dead; and calling unto him the centurion, he asked him whether he was already dead.
