Therefore*manyofthembelieved; also of honourablewomenwhich were Greeks,and of men,not a few.

Butwhen the JewsofThessalonica had knowledgethattheword of God was preachedofPaulatBerea, they came thither also, and stirred up the people.

Andthenimmediately the brethren sent awayPaul to go as it wereto the sea:but*SilasandTimotheusabodetherestill.

And they that conductedPaulbroughthimuntoAthens:andreceiving a commandmentuntoSilasandTimotheus for tocometohim with all speed*, they departed.

Now while Paul waited forthematAthens,hisspirit was stirredinhim, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry.

Thereforedisputedhein the synagogue with the Jews,and with the devout persons, andin the marketdaily**with them that met with him.

Thencertainphilosophers of the Epicureans,and of the Stoicks,encounteredhim.Andsomesaid, Whatwill*thisbabbler[a]say*? other some, He seemeth to be a setter forth of strangegods:because he preached unto themJesus,and the resurrection.

And they tookhim, and brought himuntoAreopagus,saying, May we knowwhatthisnewdoctrine,whereofthouspeakest, is?

For thou bringestcertain strange thingstoourears: we wouldknowthereforewhat these thingsmean**.

(For all the Atheniansandstrangerswhich were there spent their timeinnothingelse, but either to tell, or to hearsome new thing.)

ThenPaulstoodin the midst of Mars' hill,[b] and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceivethatin all thingsye are too superstitious.

For as I passed by, andbeheldyourdevotions*,[c] I found an altar with this*inscription, TO THE UNKNOWNGOD.Whomtherefore ye ignorantlyworship, himdeclareI unto you.

God that made the worldand all thingstherein*, seeing that heisLord of heavenandearth,dwellethnotintemples made with hands;

Neither is worshippedwithmen'shands, as though he needed any thing, seeing hegiveth to alllife,andbreath,and all things;

And hath madeofonebloodallnations of men for to dwellonall the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of theirhabitation;

That they should seek the Lord,ifhaply they might feel after him,and find him, though he benotfarfromeveryone of us:

Forinhim we live, andmove, and have our being; ascertainalso of yourownpoets have said, For we arealsohisoffspring.

Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we oughtnot to think that the Godheadislike unto gold,orsilver,orstone,graven by artandman'sdevice.

Andthetimes of this ignoranceGod winked at; but nowcommandethallmen every where to repent:

Because he hath appointed a day,in the which he willjudge the worldinrighteousnessby that manwhom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given[d]assurance unto all men, in that he hath raisedhimfrom the dead.
