John 5:13

13 But the one who was healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn [while] a crowd was in the place.

John 5:13 Meaning and Commentary

John 5:13

And he that was healed, wist not who he was
He had never seen, and perhaps had never heard of Christ before, and so knew him not; and besides, Christ gave him no opportunity of conversing with him, or so much as to ask him who he was:

for Jesus had conveyed himself away;
had slipped away, as soon as ever he had wrought the miracle:

a multitude being in [that] place;
or "from the multitude that were in [that] place"; not that he hid himself among them, and there remained undiscovered; but he passed through them, and went his way to the temple, where he found the man he had healed, as in the following verse.

John 5:13 In-Context

11 But he answered them, "The one who made me well--that one said to me, 'Pick up your mat and walk!'"
12 So they asked him, "Who is the man who said to you, 'Pick up [your mat] and walk?'"
13 But the one who was healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn [while] a crowd was in the place.
14 After these [things] Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, "Look, you have become well! Sin no longer, lest something worse happen to you."
15 The man went and reported to the Jews that Jesus was the one who made him well.
