26
Then he releasedBarabbas for them; but after having Jesus1scourged, he handed Him over to be crucified.
Jesus Is Mocked
272Then the soldiers of the governortookJesus into 3the Praetorium and gathered the whole Roman 4cohortaround Him.
28
They stripped Him and 5put a scarletrobe on Him.
29
6And after twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and a reed in His righthand; and they kneltdownbefore Him and mocked Him, saying, "7Hail, King of the Jews!"
30
8They spat on Him, and took the reed and began to beat Him on the head.
31
9After they had mocked Him, they took the scarlet robeoff Him and put His own garments back on Him, and led Him away to crucify Him.
32
10As they were coming out, they found a man of 11CyrenenamedSimon, whom they pressed into service to bear His cross.
The Crucifixion
3312And when they came to a placecalled13Golgotha, whichmeansPlace of a Skull,
34
14they gave Him 15wine to drinkmixed with gall; and after tasting it, He was unwilling* to drink.
35
And when they had crucified Him, 16they divided up His garmentsamong themselves by castinglots.
36
And sittingdown, they began to 17keepwatchover Him there.
37
And above His head they put up the chargeagainst Him which read, "18THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS."
38
At that timetworobbers were crucified with Him, one on the right and one on the left.
39
And thosepassing by were hurlingabuse at Him, 19wagging their heads
40
and saying, "20You who are going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in threedays, saveYourself! 21If You are the Son of God, comedown from the cross."
41
In the sameway the chiefpriestsalso, along with the scribes and elders, were mocking Him and saying,
42
"22He savedothers; He cannot*saveHimself. 23He is the King of Israel; let Him nowcomedown from the cross, and we will believe in Him.
43
"24HE TRUSTS IN GOD; LET GODRESCUE Him now, IF HE DELIGHTS IN HIM; for He said, 'I am the Son of God.' "
44
25The robbers who had been crucified with Him were alsoinsulting Him with the same words.
45
26Now from the sixthhourdarknessfell upon all the landuntil the ninthhour.
46
About the ninthhourJesuscried out with a loudvoice, saying, "27ELI, ELI, LAMASABACHTHANI?" that is, "MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME?"
47
And some of those who were standingthere, when they heard it, began saying, "Thisman is calling for Elijah."
48
28Immediatelyone of them ran, and taking a sponge, he filled it with sourwine and put it on a reed, and gave Him a drink.
49
But the rest of them said, "Let us seewhetherElijah will come to save Him."
50
And Jesus29cried out again with a loudvoice, and yielded up His spirit.
51
30And behold, 31the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and 32the earthshook and the rocks were split.
52
The tombs were opened, and manybodies of the saints who had 33fallenasleep were raised;
53
and coming out of the tombsafter His resurrection they entered34the holycity and appeared to many.
54
35Now the centurion, and those who were with him 36keepingguardoverJesus, when they saw37the earthquake and the things that were happening, became veryfrightened and said, "Trulythis was 38the Son of God!"
55
39Manywomen were therelooking on from a distance, who had followedJesus from Galilee while 40ministering to Him.
56
Among them was 41MaryMagdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and 42the mother of the sons of Zebedee.
Jesus Is Buried
5743When it was evening, there came a richman from Arimathea, namedJoseph, whohimself had alsobecome a disciple of Jesus.
58
Thismanwent to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. ThenPilateordered it to be given to him.
59
And Josephtook the body and wrapped it in a cleanlinencloth,
60
and laid it in his own newtomb, which he had hewn out in the rock; and he rolled44a largestone against the entrance of the tomb and wentaway.
61
And 45MaryMagdalene was there, and the otherMary, sittingopposite the grave.
62
Now on the nextday, the dayafter46the preparation, the chiefpriests and the Phariseesgatheredtogether with Pilate,
63
and said, "Sir, we remember that when He was stillalive that deceiversaid, '47Afterthreedays I am to riseagain.'
64
"Therefore, giveorders for the grave to be madesecureuntil the thirdday, otherwise His disciples may come and steal Him away and say to the people, 'He has risen from the dead,' and the lastdeception will be worse than the first."
65
Pilatesaid to them, "You have a 48guard; go, make it as secure as you knowhow."
66
And they went and made the gravesecure, and along with 49the guard they set a 50seal on 51the stone.
