25 "Eat it today," Moses said. "Today is a Sabbath day in the LORD's honor. You won't find any flakes on the ground today.

Exodus 16:25 Meaning and Commentary

Exodus 16:25

And Moses said, eat that today
That is, he said this on the seventh day in the morning, and bid them eat of it whether baked or seethed, or as it was, or just as they pleased; however, they had liberty to eat of it, and indeed they had no other, because none fell on this day:

for today is a sabbath unto the Lord;
a time of rest from labour, and to be employed in the service of the Lord:

today ye shall not find it in the field:
should they seek for it, which they had no occasion to do, since there was a sufficiency provided the day before; and this he said to prevent their going out to seek for it, which, if out of curiosity or for any other reason any of them should do, it would be in vain and fruitless.

Exodus 16:25 In-Context

23 He said to them, "Here is what the LORD commanded. He said, 'Tomorrow will be a day of rest. It will be a holy Sabbath day. It will be set apart for the Lord. So bake what you want to bake. Boil what you want to boil. Save what is left. Keep it until morning.' "
24 So they saved it until morning, just as Moses commanded. It didn't stink or get maggots in it.
25 "Eat it today," Moses said. "Today is a Sabbath day in the LORD's honor. You won't find any flakes on the ground today.
26 Gather them for six days. But on the seventh day there won't be any. It's the Sabbath."
27 In spite of what Moses said, some of the people went out on the seventh day to gather the flakes. But they didn't find any.
