Genesis 30:23 Meaning and Commentary

Genesis 30:23

And she conceived and bare a son
Through the goodness of God unto her, and for which she was greatly thankful; and said, God hath taken away my reproach;
the reproach of barrenness with which she was reproached among her neighbours; and perhaps by her sister Leah, and indeed it was a general reproach in those times; and especially, it was the more grievous to good women in the family of Abraham, because they were not the means of multiplying his seed according to the promise, and could have no hope of the Messiah springing from them.

Genesis 30:23 In-Context

21 Some time later she had a daughter. She named her Dinah.
22 Then God listened to Rachel. He showed concern for her. He made it possible for her to have children.
23 She became pregnant. She had a son. She said, "God has taken my shame away."
24 She continued, "May the LORD give me another son." So she named him Joseph.
25 After Rachel had Joseph, Jacob spoke to Laban. He said, "Send me on my way. I want to go back to my own home and country.
