Deuteronomio 17

1 »Nunca sacrifiques al Señor
tu Dios ganado, ovejas o cabras que tengan algún defecto o enfermedad, porque él detesta esa clase de ofrendas.

2 »Cuando empieces a vivir en las ciudades que el Señor
tu Dios te da, podría suceder que un hombre o una mujer del pueblo haga algo malo a los ojos del Señor
y desobedezca el pacto.

3 Por ejemplo, podría ser que sirviera a otros dioses o rindiera culto al sol, a la luna o a alguna estrella —es decir, a las fuerzas del cielo—, lo cual he prohibido terminantemente.

4 Cuando te enteres de algo así, investiga el asunto a fondo. Si resulta cierto que se ha cometido ese acto detestable en Israel,

5 entonces llevarás al hombre o la mujer responsable de esa maldad hasta las puertas de la ciudad y lo matarás a pedradas.

6 Sin embargo, nunca le quites la vida a nadie por el testimonio de un solo testigo. Siempre tendrá que haber dos o tres testigos.

7 Los testigos deberán arrojar las primeras piedras, y luego se sumará el resto del pueblo. De esa manera, limpiarás la maldad que hay en medio de ti.

8 »Supongamos que a un juez local le llega un caso demasiado difícil de resolver; por ejemplo, si alguien es culpable de asesinato o de homicidio no premeditado, o bien podría ser una demanda complicada o un caso que involucra distintos tipos de agresión. Esos casos legales llévalos al lugar que el Señor
tu Dios elija

9 y preséntalos ante los sacerdotes levitas o el juez que esté de turno en esos días. Ellos oirán el caso y declararán el veredicto.

10 Tú deberás cumplir el veredicto que ellos anuncien y la sentencia que dicten en el lugar que el Señor
elija. Harás todo lo que ellos digan, al pie de la letra.

11 Después que hayan interpretado la ley y declarado el veredicto, tendrás que ejecutar la sentencia que impongan en su totalidad; no le hagas ninguna modificación.

12 Cualquiera que tenga la arrogancia de rechazar el veredicto de un juez o de un sacerdote que representa al Señor
tu Dios tendrá que morir. De esa manera limpiarás la maldad que hay en Israel.

13 Entonces todo el pueblo se enterará de lo ocurrido y tendrá miedo de actuar con tanta arrogancia.

14 Pautas para los reyes
»Estás por entrar en la tierra que el Señor
tu Dios te da. Cuando tomes posesión de ella y te establezcas allí, tal vez se te ocurra pensar: “Deberíamos tener un rey para que nos gobierne, tal como tienen las naciones que nos rodean”.

15 Si tal cosa sucediera, asegúrate de designar como rey al hombre que el Señor
tu Dios elija. Tendrás que nombrar a un hermano israelita, no podrá ser un extranjero.

16 »El rey no deberá construir grandes establos para sí ni enviar a su gente a Egipto para comprar caballos, porque el Señor
te ha dicho: “Nunca vuelvas a Egipto”.

17 El rey no deberá tomar muchas esposas para sí, porque ellas apartarán su corazón del Señor
. Tampoco deberá acumular para sí grandes cantidades de oro y plata.

18 »Cuando se siente en el trono a reinar, deberá producir una copia de este conjunto de instrucciones en un rollo, en presencia de los sacerdotes levitas.

19 Tendrá esa copia siempre consigo y la leerá todos los días de su vida. De esa manera, aprenderá a temer al Señor
su Dios al obedecer todas las condiciones de esta serie de instrucciones y decretos.

20 La lectura diaria impedirá que se vuelva orgulloso y actúe como si fuera superior al resto de sus compatriotas, y también impedirá que se aparte de los mandatos en lo más mínimo. Además, será una garantía de que él y sus descendientes reinarán por muchas generaciones en Israel.

Deuteronomio 17 Commentary

Chapter 17

All sacrifices to be perfect, Idolaters must be slain. (1-7) Difficult controversies. (8-13) The choice of a king, His duties. (14-20)

Verses 1-7 No creature which had any blemish was to be offered in sacrifice to God. We are thus called to remember the perfect, pure, and spotless sacrifice of Christ, and reminded to serve God with the best of our abilities, time, and possession, or our pretended obedience will be hateful to him. So great a punishment as death, so remarkable a death as stoning, must be inflicted on the Jewish idolater. Let all who in our day set up idols in their hearts, remember how God punished this crime in Israel.

Verses 8-13 Courts of judgment were to be set up in every city. Though their judgment had not the Divine authority of an oracle, it was the judgment of wise, prudent, experienced men, and had the advantage of a Divine promise.

Verses 14-20 God himself was in a particular manner Israel's King; and if they set another over them, it was necessary that he should choose the person. Accordingly, when the people desired a king, they applied to Samuel, a prophet of the Lord. In all cases, God's choice, if we can but know it, should direct, determine, and overrule ours. Laws are given for the prince that should be elected. He must carefully avoid every thing that would turn him from God and religion. Riches, honours, and pleasures, are three great hinderances of godliness, (the lusts of the flesh, the lusts of the eye, and the pride of life,) especially to those in high stations; against these the king is here warned. The king must carefully study the law of God, and make that his rule; and having a copy of the Scriptures of his own writing, must read therein all the days of his life. It is not enough to have Bibles, but we must use them, use them daily, as long as we live. Christ's scholars never learn above their Bibles, but will have constant occasion for them, till they come to that world where knowledge and love will be made perfect. The king's writing and reading were as nothing, if he did not practise what he wrote and read. And those who fear God and keep his commandments, will fare the better for it even in this world.

This chapter begins with a caution not to sacrifice anything to the Lord that is blemished or ill favoured, De 17:1, an order is given to put to death men or women guilty of idolatry, where it is clearly proved upon them, De 17:2-7 and it is directed that when cases are too hard for inferior judges to determine, they should be brought to Jerusalem to the priests, Levites, and judges, which formed the great consistory there, whose sentence was to be adhered unto on pain of death, De 17:8-13, and rules are given about the choice of a king, and he is informed what he must not do, and what he should do, De 17:14-20.
