Amós 9:1-10

1 La visión de Dios junto al altar
Entonces vi una visión del Señor, quien estaba de pie junto al altar y dijo:
«Golpea la parte superior de las columnas del templo
para que los cimientos se sacudan.
Derriba el techo
sobre las cabezas de la gente.
Mataré a espada a los que sobrevivan.
¡Nadie escapará!

2 »Aunque caven hasta el lugar de los muertos,
allí descenderé y los sacaré.
Aunque suban hasta los cielos,
de allí los derribaré.

3 Aunque se escondan en la cumbre del monte Carmelo,
allí los buscaré y los capturaré.
Aunque se oculten en el fondo del océano,
enviaré tras ellos a la serpiente marina para que los muerda.

4 Aunque sus enemigos los lleven al destierro,
ordenaré a la espada que allí los mate.
Estoy decidido a traerles desastre
y no a ayudarlos».

5 El Señor, el Señor
de los Ejércitos Celestiales,
toca la tierra y esta se derrite,
y todos sus habitantes lloran.
La tierra sube como el río Nilo en tiempo de inundaciones,
y luego vuelve a hundirse.

6 El hogar del Señor
llega hasta los cielos,
mientras que sus cimientos están en la tierra.
Él levanta agua de los océanos
y la vierte como lluvia sobre la tierra.
¡El Señor
es su nombre!

7 «Israelitas, ¿son ustedes más importantes para mí
que los etíopes?
—pregunta el Señor
—.
Saqué a Israel de Egipto,
pero también traje a los filisteos de Creta
y a los arameos de Kir.

8 »Yo, el Señor
Soberano,
estoy vigilando a esta nación pecaminosa de Israel
y la destruiré
de la faz de la tierra.
Sin embargo, nunca destruiré por completo a la familia de Israel
—dice el Señor
—.

9 Pues daré la orden
y sacudiré a Israel junto con las demás naciones
como se sacude el grano en un cernidor,
sin embargo, ningún grano verdadero se perderá.

10 En cambio, todos los pecadores morirán a filo de espada,
esos que dicen: “Nada malo nos sucederá”.

INTRODUCTION TO AMOS 9

This chapter contains the fifth and last vision the prophet saw; which represents the certain desolation of the land, city, and temple, and the slaughter of all sorts of persons, high and low, none should escape it, Am 9:1; be they where they would, they should be found out, whether in hell or heaven, on the tops of the highest mountains, or in the bottom of the sea, or in a foreign land, since the eyes of the Lord were upon them for evil, Am 9:2-4; nor could they hope to escape, when they considered his greatness and his power, and what he could do, and had done; and how they had behaved towards him, even though they were the people he had brought out of Egypt, Am 9:5-7; but though the sinful kingdom should be destroyed, yet not utterly, a remnant should be saved, Am 9:8-10; and the chapter is concluded with gracious promises of raising up the tabernacle of David fallen down, and of the return of the people of Israel to their own land; and of their settlement and continuance in it, never more to depart from it, Am 9:11-15.
