El juicio de las naciones

1 »En aquellos días, en el tiempo señalado,cuando restaure yo la suerte de Judá y de Jerusalén,

2 reuniré a todas las nacionesy las haré bajar al valle de Josafat.^[a]Allí entraré en juicio contra los pueblosen cuanto a mi propiedad, mi pueblo Israel,pues lo dispersaron entre las nacionesy se repartieron mi tierra.

3 Se repartieron a mi pueblo echando suertes,cambiaron a niños por prostitutasy, para emborracharse,vendieron niñas por vino.

4 »Ahora bien, Tiro y Sidón, y regiones todas de Filistea, ¿qué tienen en contra mía? ¿Quieren acaso vengarse de mí? Si es así, yo haré que muy pronto recaiga sobre ustedes su propia venganza,

5 pues se robaron mi oro y mi plata, y se llevaron a sus templos mis valiosos tesoros.

6 A los griegos les vendieron el pueblo de Jerusalén y de Judá, para alejarlos de su tierra.

7 »Sepan, pues, que voy a sacarlos de los lugares donde fueron vendidos, y haré que recaiga sobre ustedes su propia venganza.

8 Venderé sus hijos y sus hijas al pueblo de Judá, y ellos a su vez los venderán a los sabeos, una nación lejana». El SEÑOR lo ha dicho.

9 Proclamen esto entre las naciones:¡Prepárense^[b] para la batalla!¡Movilicen a los soldados!¡Alístense para el combate todos los hombres de guerra!

10 Forjen espadas con los azadonesy hagan lanzas con las hoces.Que diga el cobarde:«¡Soy un valiente!»

11 Dense prisa, naciones vecinas,reúnanse en ese lugar.¡Haz bajar, SEÑOR, a tus valientes!

12 «Movilícense las naciones;suban hasta el valle de Josafat,que allí me sentarépara juzgar a los pueblos vecinos.

13 Mano a la hoz,que la mies está madura.Vengan a pisar las uvas,que está lleno el lagar.Sus cubas se desbordan:¡tan grande es su maldad!»

14 ¡Multitud tras multituden el valle de la Decisión!¡Cercano está el día del SEÑORen el valle de la Decisión!

15 Se oscurecerán el sol y la luna;dejarán de brillar las estrellas.

16 Rugirá el SEÑOR desde Sión,tronará su voz desde Jerusalén,y la tierra y el cielo temblarán.Pero el SEÑOR será un refugio para su pueblo,una fortaleza para los israelitas.

Bendiciones para el pueblo de Dios

17 «Entonces ustedes sabrán que yo, el SEÑOR su Dios,habito en Sión, mi monte santo.Santa será Jerusalén,y nunca más la invadirán los extranjeros.

18 »En aquel día las montañas destilarán vino dulce,y de las colinas fluirá leche;correrá el agua por los arroyos de Judá.De la casa del SEÑOR brotará una fuenteque irrigará el valle de las Acacias.

19 Pero Egipto quedará desolado,y Edom convertido en desierto,por la violencia cometida contra el pueblo de Judá,en cuya tierra derramaron sangre inocente.

20 Judá y Jerusalén serán habitadaspara siempre, por todas las generaciones.

21 ¿Perdonaré la sangre que derramaron?¡Claro que no la perdonaré!»¡El SEÑOR hará su morada en Sión!

Joel 3 Commentary

Chapter 3

God's judgments in the latter days. (1-8) The extent of these judgments. (9-17) The blessings the church shall enjoy. (18-21)

Verses 1-8 The restoration of the Jews, and the final victory of true religion over all opposers, appear to be here foretold. The contempt and scorn with which the Jews have often been treated as a people, and the little value set upon them, are noticed. None ever hardened his heart against God or his church, and prospered long.

Verses 9-17 Here is a challenge to all the enemies of God's people. There is no escaping God's judgments; hardened sinners, in that day of wrath, shall be cut off from all comfort and joy. Most of the prophets foretell the same final victory of the church of God over all that oppose it. To the wicked it will be a terrible day, but to the righteous it will be a joyful day. What cause have those who possess an interest in Christ, to glory in their Strength and their Redeemer! The acceptable year of the Lord, a day of such great favour to some, will be a day of remarkable vengeance to others: let every one that is out of Christ awake, and flee from the wrath to come.

Verses 18-21 There shall be abundant Divine influences, and the gospel will spread speedily into the remotest corners of the earth. These events are predicted under significant emblems; there is a day coming, when every thing amiss shall be amended. The fountain of this plenty is in the house of God, whence the streams take rise. Christ is this Fountain; his sufferings, merit, and grace, cleanse, refresh, and make fruitful. Gospel grace, flowing from Christ, shall reach to the Gentile world, to the most remote regions, and make them abound in fruits of righteousness; and from the house of the Lord above, from his heavenly temple, flows all the good we daily taste, and hope to enjoy eternally.

This chapter, which some make the fourth, contains a prophecy of God's judgments on all the antichristian nations at the time of the Jews' conversion, and the reasons of them, Joe 3:1-3; a threatening of Tyre and Zidon, by way of retaliation, for carrying the riches of the Jews into their temples, and selling their persons to the Greeks, Joe 3:4-8; an alarm to prepare for the battle of Armageddon, or the destruction that shall be made in the valley of Jehoshaphat, Joe 3:9-15; and after that an account of the happy state of the church of Christ, their safety and security, plenty, prosperity, and purity, to the end of the world, Joe 3:16-21.
