Judges 7:2

And the Lord said unto Gideon, the people that are with thee
are too many
It appears, by what follows, that there were 32,000 of them, which was but a small army to engage with one of 100,000 more than they; for such was the army of the Midianites and their associates, see ( Judges 8:10 ) but the people were too many, says the Lord,

for me to give the Midianites into their hands;
who would be apt to ascribe the victory to themselves, and not to the Lord; to their number, strength, and valour, and not to the hand of the Lord:

lest Israel vaunt themselves against me, saying, mine own hand hath
saved me;
or glory over me, take the glory from me, and ascribe it to themselves, boasting that by their power and prowess they had obtained the victory.

1 Yerubaal —es decir, Gedeón— y todos sus hombres se levantaron de madrugada y acamparon en el manantial de Jarod. El campamento de los madianitas estaba al norte de ellos, en el valle que está al pie del monte de Moré.

2 El SEÑOR le dijo a Gedeón: «Tienes demasiada gente para que yo entregue a Madián en sus manos. A fin de que Israel no vaya a jactarse contra mí y diga que su propia fortaleza lo ha librado,

3 anúnciale ahora al pueblo: “¡Cualquiera que esté temblando de miedo, que se vuelva y se retire del monte de Galaad!”» Así que se volvieron veintidós mil hombres, y se quedaron diez mil.

4 Pero el SEÑOR le dijo a Gedeón: «Todavía hay demasiada gente. Hazlos bajar al agua, y allí los seleccionaré por ti. Si digo: “Este irá contigo”, ese irá; pero si digo: “Este no irá contigo”, ese no irá».

5 Gedeón hizo que los hombres bajaran al agua. Allí el SEÑOR le dijo: «A los que laman el agua con la lengua, como los perros, sepáralos de los que se arrodillen a beber».
