Jesús alimenta a los cuatro mil

1 En aquellos días se reunió de nuevo mucha gente. Como no tenían nada que comer, Jesús llamó a sus discípulos y les dijo:

2 —Siento compasión de esta gente porque ya llevan tres días conmigo y no tienen nada que comer.

3 Si los despido a sus casas sin haber comido, se van a desmayar por el camino, porque algunos de ellos han venido de lejos.

4 Los discípulos objetaron:—¿Dónde se va a conseguir suficiente pan en este lugar despoblado para darles de comer?

5 —¿Cuántos panes tienen? —les preguntó Jesús.—Siete —respondieron.

6 Entonces mandó que la gente se sentara en el suelo. Tomando los siete panes, dio gracias, los partió y se los fue dando a sus discípulos para que los repartieran a la gente, y así lo hicieron.

7 Tenían además unos cuantos pescaditos. Dio gracias por ellos también y les dijo a los discípulos que los repartieran.

8 La gente comió hasta quedar satisfecha. Después los discípulos recogieron siete cestas llenas de pedazos que sobraron.

9 Los que comieron eran unos cuatro mil. Tan pronto como los despidió,

10 Jesús se embarcó con sus discípulos y se fue a la región de Dalmanuta.

11 Llegaron los fariseos y comenzaron a discutir con Jesús. Para ponerlo a prueba, le pidieron una señal del cielo.

12 Él lanzó un profundo suspiro y dijo:^[a] «¿Por qué pide esta generación una señal milagrosa? Les aseguro que no se le dará ninguna señal».

13 Entonces los dejó, volvió a embarcarse y cruzó al otro lado.

La levadura de los fariseos y la de Herodes

14 A los discípulos se les había olvidado llevar comida, y solo tenían un pan en la barca.

15 Tengan cuidado —les advirtió Jesús—; ¡ojo con la levadura de los fariseos y con la de Herodes!

16 Ellos comentaban entre sí: «Lo dice porque no tenemos pan».

17 Al darse cuenta de esto, Jesús les dijo:—¿Por qué están hablando de que no tienen pan? ¿Todavía no ven ni entienden? ¿Tienen la mente embotada?

18 ¿Es que tienen ojos, pero no ven, y oídos, pero no oyen? ¿Acaso no recuerdan?

19 Cuando partí los cinco panes para los cinco mil, ¿cuántas canastas llenas de pedazos recogieron?—Doce —respondieron.

20 —Y cuando partí los siete panes para los cuatro mil, ¿cuántas cestas llenas de pedazos recogieron?—Siete.

21 Entonces concluyó:—¿Y todavía no entienden?

Jesús sana a un ciego en Betsaida

22 Cuando llegaron a Betsaida, algunas personas le llevaron un ciego a Jesús y le rogaron que lo tocara.

23 Él tomó de la mano al ciego y lo sacó fuera del pueblo. Después de escupirle en los ojos y de poner las manos sobre él, le preguntó:—¿Puedes ver ahora?

24 El hombre alzó los ojos y dijo:—Veo gente; parecen árboles que caminan.

25 Entonces le puso de nuevo las manos sobre los ojos, y el ciego fue curado: recobró la vista y comenzó a ver todo con claridad.

26 Jesús lo mandó a su casa con esta advertencia:—No vayas a entrar en el pueblo.^[b]

La confesión de Pedro

27 Jesús y sus discípulos salieron hacia las aldeas de Cesarea de Filipo. En el camino les preguntó:—¿Quién dice la gente que soy yo?

28 —Unos dicen que Juan el Bautista, otros que Elías, y otros que uno de los profetas —contestaron.

29 —Y ustedes, ¿quién dicen que soy yo?—Tú eres el Cristo —afirmó Pedro.

30 Jesús les ordenó que no hablaran a nadie acerca de él.

Jesús predice su muerte

31 Luego comenzó a enseñarles:—El Hijo del hombre tiene que sufrir muchas cosas y ser rechazado por los ancianos, por los jefes de los sacerdotes y por los maestros de la ley. Es necesario que lo maten y que a los tres días resucite.

32 Habló de esto con toda claridad. Pedro lo llevó aparte y comenzó a reprenderlo.

33 Pero Jesús se dio la vuelta, miró a sus discípulos, y reprendió a Pedro.—¡Aléjate de mí, Satanás! —le dijo—. Tú no piensas en las cosas de Dios sino en las de los hombres.

34 Entonces llamó a la multitud y a sus discípulos.—Si alguien quiere ser mi discípulo —les dijo—, que se niegue a sí mismo, lleve su cruz y me siga.

35 Porque el que quiera salvar su vida, la perderá; pero el que pierda su vida por mi causa y por el evangelio, la salvará.

36 ¿De qué sirve ganar el mundo entero si se pierde la vida?

37 ¿O qué se puede dar a cambio de la vida?

38 Si alguien se avergüenza de mí y de mis palabras en medio de esta generación adúltera y pecadora, también el Hijo del hombre se avergonzará de él cuando venga en la gloria de su Padre con los santos ángeles.

Marcos 8 Commentary

Chapter 8

Four thousand fed by a miracle. (1-10) Christ cautions against the Pharisees and Herodians. (11-21) A blind man healed. (22-26) Peter's testimony to Christ. (27-33) Christ must be followed. (34-38)

Verses 1-10 Our Lord Jesus encouraged the meanest to come to him for life and grace. Christ knows and considers our frames. The bounty of Christ is always ready; to show that, he repeated this miracle. His favours are renewed, as our wants and necessities are. And those need not fear want, who have Christ to live upon by faith, and do so with thanksgiving.

Verses 11-21 Obstinate unbelief will have something to say, though ever so unreasonable. Christ refused to answer their demand. If they will not be convinced, they shall not. Alas! what cause we have to lament for those around us, who destroy themselves and others by their perverse and obstinate unbelief, and enmity to the gospel! When we forget the works of God, and distrust him, we should chide ourselves severely, as Christ here reproves his disciples. How is it that we so often mistake his meaning, disregard his warnings, and distrust his providence?

Verses 22-26 Here is a blind man brought to Christ by his friends. Therein appeared the faith of those that brought him. If those who are spiritually blind, do not pray for themselves, yet their friends and relations should pray for them, that Christ would be pleased to touch them. The cure was wrought gradually, which was not usual in our Lord's miracles. Christ showed in what method those commonly are healed by his grace, who by nature are spiritually blind. At first, their knowledge is confused; but, like the light of the morning, it shines more and more to the perfect day, and then they see all things clearly. Slighting Christ's favours is forfeiting them; and he will make those who do so know the worth of privileges by the want of them.

Verses 27-33 These things are written, that we may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God. These miracles of our Lord assure us that he was not conquered, but a Conqueror. Now the disciples are convinced that Jesus is the Christ; they may bear to hear of his sufferings, of which Christ here begins to give them notice. He sees that amiss in what we say and do, of which we ourselves are not aware, and knows what manner of spirit we are of, when we ourselves do not. The wisdom of man is folly, when it pretends to limit the Divine counsels. Peter did not rightly understand the nature of Christ's kingdom.

Verses 34-38 Frequent notice is taken of the great flocking there was to Christ for help in various cases. All are concerned to know this, if they expect him to heal their souls. They must not indulge the ease of the body. As the happiness of heaven with Christ, is enough to make up for the loss of life itself for him, so the gain of all the world in sin, will not make up for the ruin of the soul by sin. And there is a day coming, when the cause of Christ will appear as glorious, as some now think it mean and contemptible. May we think of that season, and view every earthly object as we shall do at that great day.
