Saul é Ungido Rei

1 Samuel apanhou um jarro de óleo, derramou-o sobre a cabeça de Saul e o beijou, dizendo: “O SENHOR o ungiu como líder da herança dele.^[a]

2 Hoje, quando você partir, encontrará dois homens perto do túmulo de Raquel, em Zelza, na fronteira de Benjamim. Eles dirão: ‘As jumentas que você foi procurar já foram encontradas. Agora seu pai deixou de se importar com elas e está preocupado com vocês. Ele está perguntando: “Como encontrarei meu filho?” ’

3 “Então, dali, você prosseguirá para o carvalho de Tabor. Três homens virão subindo ao santuário de Deus, em Betel, e encontrarão você ali. Um estará levando três cabritos, outro três pães e outro uma vasilha de couro cheia de vinho.

4 Eles o cumprimentarão e oferecerão a você dois pães, que você deve aceitar.

5 “Depois você irá a Gibeá de Deus, onde há um destacamento filisteu. Ao chegar à cidade, você encontrará um grupo de profetas que virão descendo do altar do monte tocando liras, tamborins, flautas e harpas; e eles estarão profetizando.

6 O Espírito do SENHOR se apossará de você, e com eles você profetizará^[b] e será um novo homem.

7 Assim que esses sinais se cumprirem, faça o que achar melhor, pois Deus está com você.

8 “Vá na minha frente até Gilgal. Depois eu irei também, para oferecer holocaustos e sacrifícios de comunhão,^[c] mas você deve esperar sete dias, até que eu chegue e diga a você o que fazer”.

9 Quando se virou para afastar-se de Samuel, Deus mudou o coração de Saul, e todos aqueles sinais se cumpriram naquele dia.

10 Chegando a Gibeá, um grupo veio em sua direção; o Espírito de Deus se apossou dele, e ele profetizou no meio deles.

11 Quando os que já o conheciam viram-no profetizando com os profetas, perguntaram uns aos outros: “O que aconteceu ao filho de Quis? Saul também está entre os profetas?”

12 Um homem daquele lugar respondeu: “E quem é o pai deles?” De modo que isto se tornou um ditado: “Saul também está entre os profetas?”

13 Depois que Saul parou de profetizar, foi para o altar do monte.

14 Então o tio de Saul perguntou a ele e ao seu servo: “Aonde vocês foram?”Ele respondeu: “Procurar as jumentas. Quando, porém, vimos que não seriam encontradas, fomos falar com Samuel”.

15 “O que Samuel disse a vocês?”, perguntou o tio.

16 Saul respondeu: “Ele nos garantiu que as jumentas tinham sido encontradas”. Todavia, Saul não contou ao tio o que Samuel tinha dito sobre o reino.

17 Samuel convocou o povo de Israel ao SENHOR, em Mispá,

18 e disse a eles: “Assim diz o SENHOR, o Deus de Israel: ‘Eu tirei Israel do Egito e libertei vocês do poder do Egito e de todos os reinos que os oprimiam’.

19 Mas vocês agora rejeitaram o Deus que os salva de todas as suas desgraças e angústias. E disseram: ‘Não! Escolhe um rei para nós’. Por isso, agora, apresentem-se perante o SENHOR, de acordo com as suas tribos e os seus clãs”.

20 Tendo Samuel feito todas as tribos de Israel se aproximarem, a de Benjamim foi escolhida.

21 Então fez ir à frente a tribo de Benjamim, clã por clã, e o clã de Matri foi escolhido. Finalmente foi escolhido Saul, filho de Quis. Quando, porém, o procuraram, ele não foi encontrado.

22 Consultaram novamente o SENHOR: “Ele já chegou?”E o SENHOR disse: “Sim, ele está escondido no meio da bagagem”.

23 Correram e o tiraram de lá. Quando ficou em pé no meio do povo, os mais altos só chegavam aos seus ombros.

24 E Samuel disse a todos: “Vocês veem o homem que o SENHOR escolheu? Não há ninguém como ele no meio de todo o povo”.Então todos gritaram: “Viva o rei!”

25 Samuel expôs ao povo as leis do reino. Ele as escreveu num livro e o pôs perante o SENHOR. Depois disso, Samuel mandou o povo de volta para as suas casas.

26 Saul também foi para sua casa em Gibeá, acompanhado por guerreiros, cujo coração Deus tinha tocado.

27 Alguns vadios, porém, disseram: “Como este homem pode nos salvar?” Desprezaram-no e não lhe trouxeram presente algum. Mas Saul ficou calado.

Chapter 10

Samuel anoints Saul. (1-8) Saul prophesies. (9-16) Saul chosen king. (17-27)

Verses 1-8 The sacred anointing, then used, pointed at the great Messiah, or Anointed One, the King of the church, and High Priest of our profession, who was anointed with the oil of the Spirit, not by measure, but without measure, and above all the priests and princes of the Jewish church. For Saul's further satisfaction, Samuel gives him some signs which should come to pass the same day. The first place he directs him to, was the sepulchre of one of his ancestors; there he must be reminded of his own mortality, and now that he had a crown before him, must think of his grave, in which all his honour would be laid in the dust. From the time of Samuel there appears to have been schools, or places where pious young men were brought up in the knowledge of Divine things. Saul should find himself strongly moved to join with them, and should be turned into another man from what he had been. The Spirit of God changes men, wonderfully transforms them. Saul, by praising God in the communion of saints, became another man, but it may be questioned if he became a new man.

Verses 9-16 The signs Samuel had given Saul, came to pass punctually; he found that God had given him another heart, another disposition of mind. Yet let not an outward show of devotion, and a sudden change for the present, be too much relied on; Saul among the prophets was Saul still. His being anointed was kept private. He leaves it to God to carry on his own work by Samuel, and sits still, to see how the matter will fall.

Verses 17-27 Samuel tells the people, Ye have this day rejected your God. So little fond was Saul now of that power, which soon after, when he possessed it, he could not think of parting with, that he hid himself. It is good to be conscious of our unworthiness and insufficiency for the services to which we are called; but men should not go into the contrary extreme, by refusing the employments to which the Lord and the church call them. The greater part of the people treated the matter with indifference. Saul modestly went home to his own house, but was attended by a band of men whose hearts God disposed to support his authority. If the heart bend at any time the right way, it is because He has touched it. One touch is enough when it is Divine. Others despised him. Thus differently are men affected to our exalted Redeemer. There is a remnant who submit to him, and follow him wherever he goes; they are those whose hearts God has touched, whom he has made willing. But there are others who despise him, who ask, How shall this man save us? They are offended in him, and they will be punished.
