Salmos 105

1 Deem graças ao SENHOR, proclamem o seu nome;divulguem os seus feitos entre as nações.

2 Cantem para ele e louvem-no;relatem todas as suas maravilhas.

3 Gloriem-se no seu santo nome;alegre-se o coração dos que buscam o SENHOR.

4 Recorram ao SENHOR e ao seu poder;busquem sempre a sua presença.

5 Lembrem-se das maravilhas que ele fez,dos seus prodígios e das sentenças de juízo que pronunciou,

6 ó descendentes de Abraão, seu servo,ó filhos de Jacó, seus escolhidos.

7 Ele é o SENHOR, o nosso Deus;seus decretos são para toda a terra.

8 Ele se lembra para sempre da sua aliança,por mil gerações, da palavra que ordenou,

9 da aliança que fez com Abraão,do juramento que fez a Isaque.

10 Ele o confirmou como decreto a Jacó,a Israel como aliança eterna, quando disse:

11 “Darei a você a terra de Canaã,a herança que lhe pertence”.

12 Quando ainda eram poucos,um punhado de peregrinos na terra,

13 e vagueavam de nação em nação,de um reino a outro,

14 ele não permitiu que ninguém os oprimisse,mas a favor deles repreendeu reis, dizendo:

15 “Não toquem nos meus ungidos;não maltratem os meus profetas”.

16 Ele mandou vir fome sobre a terrae destruiu todo o seu sustento;

17 mas enviou um homem adiante deles,José, que foi vendido como escravo.

18 Machucaram-lhe os pés com correntese com ferros prenderam-lhe o pescoço,

19 até cumprir-se a sua prediçãoe a palavra do SENHOR confirmar o que dissera.

20 O rei mandou soltá-lo,o governante dos povos o libertou.

21 Ele o constituiu senhor de seu palácioe administrador de todos os seus bens,

22 para instruir os seus oficiais como desejassee ensinar a sabedoria às autoridades do rei.

23 Então Israel foi para o Egito,Jacó viveu como estrangeiro na terra de Cam.

24 Deus fez proliferar o seu povo,tornou-o mais poderoso do que os seus adversários

25 e mudou o coração deles para que odiassem o seu povo,para que tramassem contra os seus servos.

26 Então enviou seu servo Moisés,e Arão, a quem tinha escolhido,

27 por meio dos quais realizou os seus sinais milagrosose as suas maravilhas na terra de Cam.

28 Ele enviou trevas, e houve trevas,e eles não se rebelaram^[a] contra as suas palavras.

29 Ele transformou as águas deles em sangue,causando a morte dos seus peixes.

30 A terra deles ficou infestada de rãs,até mesmo os aposentos reais.

31 Ele ordenou, e enxames de moscas e piolhos^[b]invadiram o território deles.

32 Deu-lhes granizo, em vez de chuva,e raios flamejantes por toda a sua terra;

33 arrasou as suas videiras e figueirase destruiu as árvores do seu território.

34 Ordenou, e vieram enxames de gafanhotos,gafanhotos inumeráveis,

35 e devoraram toda a vegetação daquela terra,e consumiram tudo o que a lavoura produziu.

36 Depois matou todos os primogênitos da terra deles,todas as primícias da sua virilidade.

37 Ele tirou de lá Israel, que saiu cheio de prata e ouro.Não havia em suas tribos quem fraquejasse.

38 Os egípcios alegraram-se quando eles saíram,pois estavam com verdadeiro pavor dos israelitas.

39 Ele estendeu uma nuvem para lhes dar sombra,e fogo para iluminar a noite.

40 Pediram, e ele enviou codornizese saciou-os com pão do céu.

41 Ele fendeu a rocha, e jorrou água,que escorreu como um rio pelo deserto.

42 Pois ele se lembrou da santa promessaque fizera ao seu servo Abraão.

43 Fez o seu povo sair cheio de júbiloe os seus escolhidos com cânticos alegres.

44 Deu-lhes as terras das nações,e eles tomaram posse do fruto do trabalho de outros povos,

45 para que obedecessem aos seus decretose guardassem as suas leis.Aleluia!

Salmos 105 Commentary

Chapter 105

A solemn call to praise and serve the Lord. (1-7) His gracious dealings with Israel. (8-23) Their deliverance from Egypt, and their settlement in Canaan. (24-45)

Verses 1-7 Our devotion is here stirred up, that we may stir up ourselves to praise God. Seek his strength; that is, his grace; the strength of his Spirit to work in us that which is good, which we cannot do but by strength derived from him, for which he will be sought. Seek to have his favour to eternity, therefore continue seeking it while living in this world; for he will not only be found, but he will reward those that diligently seek him.

Verses 8-23 Let us remember the Redeemer's marvellous works, his wonders, and the judgments of his mouth. Though true Christians are few number, strangers and pilgrims upon earth, yet a far better inheritance than Canaan is made sure to them by the covenant of God; and if we have the anointing of the Holy Spirit, none can do us any harm. Afflictions are among our mercies. They prove our faith and love, they humble our pride, they wean us from the world, and quicken our prayers. Bread is the staff which supports life; when that staff is broken, the body fails and sinks to the earth. The word of God is the staff of spiritual life, the food and support of the soul: the sorest judgment is a famine of hearing the word of the Lord. Such a famine was sore in all lands when Christ appeared in the flesh; whose coming, and the blessed effect of it, are shadowed forth in the history of Joseph. At the appointed time Christ was exalted as Mediator; all the treasures of grace and salvation are at his disposal, perishing sinners come to him, and are relieved by him.

Verses 24-45 As the believer commonly thrives best in his soul when under the cross; so the church also flourishes most in true holiness, and increases in number, while under persecution. Yet instruments shall be raised up for their deliverance, and plagues may be expected by persecutors. And see the special care God took of his people in the wilderness. All the benefits bestowed on Israel as a nation, were shadows of spiritual blessings with which we are blessed in Christ Jesus. Having redeemed us with his blood, restored our souls to holiness, and set us at liberty from Satan's bondage, he guides and guards us all the way. He satisfies our souls with the bread of heaven, and the water of life from the Rock of salvation, and will bring us safely to heaven. He redeems his servants from all iniquity, and purifies them unto himself, to be a peculiar people, zealous of good works.

INTRODUCTION TO PSALM 105

This psalm was penned by David, and sung at the time when the ark was brought from the house of Obededom to the place which David had prepared for it; at least the first fifteen verses of it, the other part being probably added afterwards by the same inspired penman, as appears from 1Ch 16:1-7. The subject matter of the psalm is the special and distinguishing goodness of God to the children of Israel, and to his church and people, of which they were typical: the history of God's regard to and care of their principal ancestors, Abraham, Jacob, Joseph and of the whole body of the people, in bringing them out of Egypt, leading them through the wilderness, and settling them in the land of Canaan, is here recited, as an argument for praise and thankfulness.
