1 Behold what manner of charity the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called and should be the sons of God. Therefore the world knoweth not us, because it knew not him.
1 See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and that is what we are. The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.
2 Dearly beloved, we are now the sons of God: and it hath not yet appeared what we shall be. We know that when he shall appear we shall be like to him: because we shall see him as he is.
2 Beloved, we are God's children now; what we will be has not yet been revealed. What we do know is this: when he is revealed, we will be like him, for we will see him as he is.
3 And every one that hath this hope in him sanctifieth himself, as he also is holy.
3 And all who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure.
4 Whosoever committeth sin committeth also iniquity. And sin is iniquity.
4 Everyone who commits sin is guilty of lawlessness; sin is lawlessness.
5 And you know that he appeared to take away our sins: and in him there is no sin.
5 You know that he was revealed to take away sins, and in him there is no sin.
6 Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: and whosoever sinneth hath not seen him nor known him.
6 No one who abides in him sins; no one who sins has either seen him or known him.
7 Little children, let no man deceive you. He that doth justice is just, even as he is just.
7 Little children, let no one deceive you. Everyone who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous.
8 He that committeth sin is of the devil: for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God appeared, that he might destroy the works of the devil.
8 Everyone who commits sin is a child of the devil; for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The Son of God was revealed for this purpose, to destroy the works of the devil.
9 Whosoever is born of God committeth not sin: for his seed abideth in him. And he cannot sin, because he is born of God.
9 Those who have been born of God do not sin, because God's seed abides in them; they cannot sin, because they have been born of God.
10 In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil. Whosoever is not just is not of God, or he that loveth not his brother.
10 The children of God and the children of the devil are revealed in this way: all who do not do what is right are not from God, nor are those who do not love their brothers and sisters.
11 For this is the declaration which you have heard from the beginning, that you should love one another.
11 For this is the message you have heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.
12 Not as Cain, who was of the wicked one and killed his brother. And wherefore did he kill him? Because his own works were wicked: and his brother’s just.
12 We must not be like Cain who was from the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own deeds were evil and his brother's righteous.
13 Wonder not, brethren, if the world hate you.
13 Do not be astonished, brothers and sisters, that the world hates you.
14 We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not abideth in death.
14 We know that we have passed from death to life because we love one another. Whoever does not love abides in death.
15 Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer. And you know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in himself.
15 All who hate a brother or sister are murderers, and you know that murderers do not have eternal life abiding in them.
16 In this we have known the charity of God, because he hath laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.
16 We know love by this, that he laid down his life for us—and we ought to lay down our lives for one another.
17 He that hath the substance of this world and shall see his brother in need and shall shut up his bowels from him: how doth the charity of God abide in him?
17 How does God's love abide in anyone who has the world's goods and sees a brother or sister in need and yet refuses help?
18 My little children, let us not love in word nor in tongue, but in deed and in truth.
18 Little children, let us love, not in word or speech, but in truth and action.
19 In this we know that we are of the truth and in his sight shall persuade our hearts.
19 And by this we will know that we are from the truth and will reassure our hearts before him
20 For if our heart reprehend us, God is greater than our heart and knoweth all things.
20 whenever our hearts condemn us; for God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything.
21 Dearly beloved, if our heart do not reprehend us, we have confidence towards God.
21 Beloved, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have boldness before God;
22 And whatsoever we shall ask, we shall receive of him: because we keep his commandments and do those things which are pleasing in his sight.
22 and we receive from him whatever we ask, because we obey his commandments and do what pleases him.
23 And this is his commandment: That we should believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, as he hath given commandment unto us.
23 And this is his commandment, that we should believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he has commanded us.
24 And he that keepeth his commandments abideth in him, and he in him. And in this we know that he abideth in us by the Spirit which he hath given us.
24 All who obey his commandments abide in him, and he abides in them. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit that he has given us.
