1 Saúl consulta a una médium<br />Por ese tiempo, los filisteos reunieron sus ejércitos para ir a la guerra contra Israel. El rey Aquis le dijo a David:<br />—Se espera que tú y tus hombres salgan conmigo a la batalla.

In those days the Philistines gathered their forces to fight against Israel. Achish said to David, “You must understand that you and your men will accompany me in the army.”
2 —¡Muy bien! —acordó David—. Ahora comprobarás tú mismo lo que podemos hacer.<br />Después Aquis le dijo a David:<br />—Te haré mi guardaespaldas personal de por vida.

David said, “Then you will see for yourself what your servant can do.” Achish replied, “Very well, I will make you my bodyguard for life.”
3 Durante ese tiempo, Samuel había muerto y todo Israel había hecho duelo por él. Fue enterrado en Ramá, su ciudad natal. Saúl había expulsado del territorio de Israel a todos los médiums y a todos los que consultaban los espíritus de los muertos.

Now Samuel was dead, and all Israel had mourned for him and buried him in his own town of Ramah. Saul had expelled the mediums and spiritists from the land.
4 Los filisteos montaron su campamento en Sunem, y Saúl reunió a todo el ejército de Israel y acampó en Gilboa.

The Philistines assembled and came and set up camp at Shunem, while Saul gathered all Israel and set up camp at Gilboa.
5 Cuando Saúl vio al inmenso ejército filisteo, tuvo miedo y se aterrorizó.

When Saul saw the Philistine army, he was afraid; terror filled his heart.
6 Entonces le preguntó al Señor<br /> qué debía hacer, pero el Señor<br /> rehusó contestarle ya fuera por sueños o por sorteo sagrado<br /> o por medio de los profetas.

He inquired of the LORD, but the LORD did not answer him by dreams or Urim or prophets.
7 Así que Saúl les dijo a sus consejeros:<br />—Busquen a una mujer que sea médium, para ir y preguntarle qué hacer.<br />Sus consejeros le respondieron:<br />—Hay una médium en Endor.

Saul then said to his attendants, “Find me a woman who is a medium, so I may go and inquire of her.” “There is one in Endor,” they said.
8 Entonces Saúl se disfrazó con ropa común en lugar de ponerse las vestiduras reales y fue a la casa de la mujer por la noche, acompañado de dos de sus hombres.<br />—Tengo que hablar con un hombre que ha muerto —le dijo—. ¿Puedes invocar a su espíritu para mí?

So Saul disguised himself, putting on other clothes, and at night he and two men went to the woman. “Consult a spirit for me,” he said, “and bring up for me the one I name.”
9 —¿Está tratando de que me maten? —preguntó la mujer—. Usted sabe que Saúl ha expulsado a todos los médiums y a todos los que consultan los espíritus de los muertos. ¿Por qué me tiende una trampa?

But the woman said to him, “Surely you know what Saul has done. He has cut off the mediums and spiritists from the land. Why have you set a trap for my life to bring about my death?”
10 Pero Saúl le hizo un juramento en el nombre del Señor<br /> y le prometió:<br />—Tan cierto como que el Señor<br /> vive, nada malo te pasará por hacerlo.

Saul swore to her by the LORD, “As surely as the LORD lives, you will not be punished for this.”
11 Finalmente, la mujer dijo:<br />—Bien, ¿el espíritu de quién quiere que invoque?<br />—Llama a Samuel —respondió Saúl.

Then the woman asked, “Whom shall I bring up for you?” “Bring up Samuel,” he said.
12 Cuando la mujer vio a Samuel, gritó:<br />—¡Me engañó! ¡Usted es Saúl!

When the woman saw Samuel, she cried out at the top of her voice and said to Saul, “Why have you deceived me? You are Saul!”
13 —No tengas miedo —le dijo el rey—. ¿Qué es lo que ves?<br />—Veo a un dios<br /> subiendo de la tierra —dijo ella.

The king said to her, “Don’t be afraid. What do you see?” The woman said, “I see a ghostly figure coming up out of the earth.”
14 —¿Qué aspecto tiene? —preguntó Saúl.<br />—Es un hombre anciano envuelto en un manto —le contestó ella.<br />Saúl se dio cuenta de que era Samuel, y se postró en el suelo delante de él.

“What does he look like?” he asked. “An old man wearing a robe is coming up,” she said. Then Saul knew it was Samuel, and he bowed down and prostrated himself with his face to the ground.
15 —¿Por qué me molestas, llamándome a regresar? —le preguntó Samuel a Saúl.<br />—Porque estoy en graves dificultades —contestó Saúl—. Los filisteos están en guerra conmigo y Dios me ha dejado y no me responde ni por medio de profetas ni por sueños, entonces te llamé para que me digas qué hacer.

Samuel said to Saul, “Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up?” “I am in great distress,” Saul said. “The Philistines are fighting against me, and God has departed from me. He no longer answers me, either by prophets or by dreams. So I have called on you to tell me what to do.”
16 Pero Samuel respondió:<br />—¿Por qué me preguntas a mí, si el Señor<br /> te abandonó y se ha vuelto tu enemigo?

Samuel said, “Why do you consult me, now that the LORD has departed from you and become your enemy?
17 El Señor<br /> ha hecho exactamente lo que dijo que haría. Te ha arrancado el reino y se lo dio a tu rival, David.

The LORD has done what he predicted through me. The LORD has torn the kingdom out of your hands and given it to one of your neighbors—to David.
18 Hoy el Señor<br /> te ha hecho esto porque rehusaste llevar a cabo su ira feroz contra los amalecitas.

Because you did not obey the LORD or carry out his fierce wrath against the Amalekites, the LORD has done this to you today.
19 Además, el Señor<br /> te entregará a ti y al ejército de Israel en manos de los filisteos, y mañana tú y tus hijos estarán aquí conmigo. El Señor<br /> derribará al ejército de Israel y caerá derrotado.

The LORD will deliver both Israel and you into the hands of the Philistines, and tomorrow you and your sons will be with me. The LORD will also give the army of Israel into the hands of the Philistines.”
20 Entonces Saúl cayó al suelo cuan largo era, paralizado por el miedo a causa de las palabras de Samuel. También estaba desfallecido de hambre, porque no había comido nada en todo el día ni en toda la noche.

Immediately Saul fell full length on the ground, filled with fear because of Samuel’s words. His strength was gone, for he had eaten nothing all that day and all that night.
21 Cuando la mujer lo vio tan deshecho, le dijo:<br />—Señor, obedecí sus órdenes a riesgo de mi vida.

When the woman came to Saul and saw that he was greatly shaken, she said, “Look, your servant has obeyed you. I took my life in my hands and did what you told me to do.
22 Ahora haga lo que digo, y déjeme que le dé algo de comer para que pueda recuperar sus fuerzas para el viaje de regreso.

Now please listen to your servant and let me give you some food so you may eat and have the strength to go on your way.”
23 Pero Saúl se negó a comer. Entonces sus consejeros también le insistieron que comiera. Así que finalmente cedió, se levantó del suelo y tomó asiento.

He refused and said, “I will not eat.” But his men joined the woman in urging him, and he listened to them. He got up from the ground and sat on the couch.
24 La mujer había estado engordando un becerro, así que fue con rapidez y lo mató. Tomó un poco de harina, la amasó y horneó pan sin levadura.

The woman had a fattened calf at the house, which she butchered at once. She took some flour, kneaded it and baked bread without yeast.
25 Entonces les llevó la comida a Saúl y a sus consejeros, y comieron. Después salieron en la oscuridad de la noche.

Then she set it before Saul and his men, and they ate. That same night they got up and left.
