1 Israel pide un rey<br />Cuando Samuel envejeció, nombró a sus hijos como jueces de Israel.

When Samuel grew old, he appointed his sons as Israel’s leaders.
2 Joel y Abías, sus hijos mayores, establecieron su corte en Beerseba.

The name of his firstborn was Joel and the name of his second was Abijah, and they served at Beersheba.
3 Pero ellos no eran como su padre, porque codiciaban el dinero; aceptaban sobornos y pervertían la justicia.

But his sons did not follow his ways. They turned aside after dishonest gain and accepted bribes and perverted justice.
4 Finalmente, todos los ancianos de Israel se reunieron en Ramá para hablar del asunto con Samuel.

So all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah.
5 «Mira, Samuel —le dijeron—, ya eres anciano y tus hijos no son como tú. Danos un rey para que nos juzgue así como lo tienen las demás naciones».

They said to him, “You are old, and your sons do not follow your ways; now appoint a king to lead us, such as all the other nations have.”
6 Samuel se disgustó con esta petición y fue al Señor<br /> en busca de orientación.

But when they said, “Give us a king to lead us,” this displeased Samuel; so he prayed to the LORD.
7 «Haz todo lo que te digan —le respondió el Señor<br />—, porque es a mí a quien rechazan y no a ti; ya no quieren que yo siga siendo su rey.

And the LORD told him: “Listen to all that the people are saying to you; it is not you they have rejected, but they have rejected me as their king.
8 Desde que los saqué de Egipto me han abandonado continuamente y han seguido a otros dioses. Y ahora te tratan a ti de la misma manera.

As they have done from the day I brought them up out of Egypt until this day, forsaking me and serving other gods, so they are doing to you.
9 Haz lo que te pidan, pero adviérteles seriamente acerca de la manera en que reinará sobre ellos un rey».

Now listen to them; but warn them solemnly and let them know what the king who will reign over them will claim as his rights.”
10 Samuel advierte contra tener un rey<br />Entonces Samuel transmitió la advertencia del Señor<br /> al pueblo que pedía un rey.

Samuel told all the words of the LORD to the people who were asking him for a king.
11 —Esta es la manera en que un rey gobernará sobre ustedes —les dijo—. El rey reclutará en el ejército a los hijos de ustedes y los asignará a los carros de guerra y a sus conductores, y los hará correr delante de sus carros.

He said, “This is what the king who will reign over you will claim as his rights: He will take your sons and make them serve with his chariots and horses, and they will run in front of his chariots.
12 Algunos serán generales y capitanes del ejército,<br /> otros serán obligados a arar y a cosechar los cultivos del rey, y otros harán las armas y el equipo para los carros de guerra.

Some he will assign to be commanders of thousands and commanders of fifties, and others to plow his ground and reap his harvest, and still others to make weapons of war and equipment for his chariots.
13 El rey tomará a las hijas de ustedes y las obligará a cocinar, a hornear y a hacer perfumes para él.

He will take your daughters to be perfumers and cooks and bakers.
14 Les quitará a ustedes lo mejor de sus campos, viñedos y huertos de olivos, y se los dará a sus oficiales.

He will take the best of your fields and vineyards and olive groves and give them to his attendants.
15 Tomará una décima parte de su grano y de sus cosechas de uvas y la repartirá entre sus oficiales y miembros de la corte.

He will take a tenth of your grain and of your vintage and give it to his officials and attendants.
16 Les quitará sus esclavos y esclavas, y les exigirá lo mejor de sus ganados<br /> y burros para su propio uso.

Your male and female servants and the best of your cattle and donkeys he will take for his own use.
17 Les exigirá la décima parte de sus rebaños, y ustedes serán sus esclavos.

He will take a tenth of your flocks, and you yourselves will become his slaves.
18 Cuando llegue ese día, suplicarán ser aliviados de este rey que ahora piden, pero entonces el Señor<br /> no los ayudará.

When that day comes, you will cry out for relief from the king you have chosen, but the LORD will not answer you in that day.”
19 Sin embargo, el pueblo se negó a escuchar la advertencia de Samuel.<br />—Aun así, todavía queremos un rey —dijeron ellos—.

But the people refused to listen to Samuel. “No!” they said. “We want a king over us.
20 Nuestro deseo es ser como las naciones que nos rodean. El rey nos juzgará y será nuestro líder en las batallas.

Then we will be like all the other nations, with a king to lead us and to go out before us and fight our battles.”
21 Así que Samuel le repitió al Señor<br /> lo que el pueblo dijo,

When Samuel heard all that the people said, he repeated it before the LORD.
22 y el Señor<br /> respondió: «Haz lo que te piden y dales un rey». Entonces Samuel estuvo de acuerdo y los envió a sus casas.

The LORD answered, “Listen to them and give them a king.” Then Samuel said to the Israelites, “Everyone go back to your own town.”
