HNV 1 Eliyah the Tishbi, who was of the sojourners of Gil`ad, said to Ach'av, As the LORD, the God of Yisra'el, lives, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to my word. NIV 1 Now Elijah the Tishbite, from Tishbe in Gilead, said to Ahab, “As the LORD, the God of Israel, lives, whom I serve, there will be neither dew nor rain in the next few years except at my word.” HNV 2 The word of the LORD came to him, saying, NIV 2 Then the word of the LORD came to Elijah: HNV 3 Get you hence, and turn you eastward, and hide yourself by the brook Kerit, that is before the Yarden. NIV 4 You will drink from the brook, and I have directed the ravens to supply you with food there.” HNV 5 So he went and did according to the word of the LORD; for he went and lived by the brook Kerit, that is before the Yarden. NIV 5 So he did what the LORD had told him. He went to the Kerith Ravine, east of the Jordan, and stayed there. HNV 6 The ravens brought him bread and flesh in the morning, and bread and flesh in the evening; and he drank of the brook. NIV 6 The ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning and bread and meat in the evening, and he drank from the brook. HNV 7 It happened after a while, that the brook dried up, because there was no rain in the land. NIV 7 Some time later the brook dried up because there had been no rain in the land. HNV 8 The word of the LORD came to him, saying, NIV 8 Then the word of the LORD came to him: HNV 9 Arise, get you to Tzarfat, which belongs to Tzidon, and dwell there: behold, I have commanded a widow there to sustain you. NIV 9 “Go at once to Zarephath in the region of Sidon and stay there. I have directed a widow there to supply you with food.” HNV 10 So he arose and went to Tzarfat; and when he came to the gate of the city, behold, a widow was there gathering sticks: and he called to her, and said, Please get me a little water in a vessel, that I may drink. NIV 10 So he went to Zarephath. When he came to the town gate, a widow was there gathering sticks. He called to her and asked, “Would you bring me a little water in a jar so I may have a drink?” HNV 11 As she was going to get it, he called to her, and said, Please bring me a morsel of bread in your hand. NIV 11 As she was going to get it, he called, “And bring me, please, a piece of bread.” HNV 12 She said, As the LORD your God lives, I aren't they a cake, but a handful of meal in the jar, and a little oil in the jar: and, behold, I am gathering two sticks, that I may go in and bake it for me and my son, that we may eat it, and die. NIV 12 “As surely as the LORD your God lives,” she replied, “I don’t have any bread—only a handful of flour in a jar and a little olive oil in a jug. I am gathering a few sticks to take home and make a meal for myself and my son, that we may eat it—and die.” HNV 13 Eliyah said to her, Don't be afraid; go and do as you have said; but make me of it a little cake first, and bring it forth to me, and afterward make for you and for your son. NIV 13 Elijah said to her, “Don’t be afraid. Go home and do as you have said. But first make a small loaf of bread for me from what you have and bring it to me, and then make something for yourself and your son. HNV 14 For thus says the LORD, the God of Yisra'el, The jar of meal shall not empty, neither shall the jar of oil fail, until the day that the LORD sends rain on the eretz. NIV 14 For this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘The jar of flour will not be used up and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the LORD sends rain on the land.’ ” HNV 15 She went and did according to the saying of Eliyah: and she, and he, and her house, ate [many] days. NIV 15 She went away and did as Elijah had told her. So there was food every day for Elijah and for the woman and her family. HNV 16 The jar of meal didn't empty, neither did the jar of oil fail, according to the word of the LORD, which he spoke by Eliyah. NIV 16 For the jar of flour was not used up and the jug of oil did not run dry, in keeping with the word of the LORD spoken by Elijah. HNV 17 It happened after these things, that the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, fell sick; and his sickness was so sore, that there was no breath left in him. NIV 17 Some time later the son of the woman who owned the house became ill. He grew worse and worse, and finally stopped breathing. HNV 18 She said to Eliyah, What have I to do with you, you man of God? you are come to me to bring my sin to memory, and to kill my son! NIV 18 She said to Elijah, “What do you have against me, man of God? Did you come to remind me of my sin and kill my son?” HNV 19 He said to her, Give me your son. He took him out of her bosom, and carried him up into the chamber, where he abode, and laid him on his own bed. NIV 19 “Give me your son,” Elijah replied. He took him from her arms, carried him to the upper room where he was staying, and laid him on his bed. HNV 20 He cried to the LORD, and said, LORD my God, have you also brought evil on the widow with whom I sojourn, by killing her son? NIV 20 Then he cried out to the LORD, “LORD my God, have you brought tragedy even on this widow I am staying with, by causing her son to die?” HNV 21 He stretched himself on the child three times, and cried to the LORD, and said, LORD my God, please let this child's soul come into him again. NIV 21 Then he stretched himself out on the boy three times and cried out to the LORD, “LORD my God, let this boy’s life return to him!” HNV 22 The LORD listened to the voice of Eliyah; and the soul of the child came into him again, and he revived. NIV 22 The LORD heard Elijah’s cry, and the boy’s life returned to him, and he lived. HNV 23 Eliyah took the child, and brought him down out of the chamber into the house, and delivered him to his mother; and Eliyah said, Behold, your son lives. NIV 23 Elijah picked up the child and carried him down from the room into the house. He gave him to his mother and said, “Look, your son is alive!” HNV 24 The woman said to Eliyah, Now I know that you are a man of God, and that the word of the LORD in your mouth is truth. NIV 24 Then the woman said to Elijah, “Now I know that you are a man of God and that the word of the LORD from your mouth is the truth.”
