2 Corinthians 2

RHE

NRS

1 But I determined this with myself, to come to you again in sorrow.
1 So I made up my mind not to make you another painful visit.
2 For if I make you sorrowful, who is he then that can make me glad, but the same who is made sorrowful by me?
2 For if I cause you pain, who is there to make me glad but the one whom I have pained?
3 And I wrote this same to you: that I may not, when I come, have sorrow upon sorrow from them of whom I ought to rejoice: having confidence in you all, that my joy is the joy of you all.
3 And I wrote as I did, so that when I came, I might not suffer pain from those who should have made me rejoice; for I am confident about all of you, that my joy would be the joy of all of you.
4 For out of much affliction and anguish of heart, I wrote to you with many tears: not that you should be made sorrowful: but that you might know the charity I have more abundantly towards you.
4 For I wrote you out of much distress and anguish of heart and with many tears, not to cause you pain, but to let you know the abundant love that I have for you.
5 And if any one have caused grief, he hath not grieved me: but in part, that I may not burden you all.
5 But if anyone has caused pain, he has caused it not to me, but to some extent—not to exaggerate it—to all of you.
6 To him who is such a one, this rebuke is sufficient, which is given by many.
6 This punishment by the majority is enough for such a person;
7 So that on the contrary, you should rather forgive him and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one be swallowed up with overmuch sorrow.
7 so now instead you should forgive and console him, so that he may not be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow.
8 Wherefore, I beseech you that you would confirm your charity towards him.
8 So I urge you to reaffirm your love for him.
9 For to this end also did I write, that I may know the experiment of you, whether you be obedient in all things.
9 I wrote for this reason: to test you and to know whether you are obedient in everything.
10 And to whom you have pardoned any thing, I also. For, what I have pardoned, if I have pardoned any thing, for your sakes have I done it in the person of Christ:
10 Anyone whom you forgive, I also forgive. What I have forgiven, if I have forgiven anything, has been for your sake in the presence of Christ.
11 That we be not overreached by Satan. For we are not ignorant of his devices.
11 And we do this so that we may not be outwitted by Satan; for we are not ignorant of his designs.
12 And when I was come to Troas for the gospel of Christ and a door was opened unto me in the Lord,
12 When I came to Troas to proclaim the good news of Christ, a door was opened for me in the Lord;
13 I had no rest in my spirit, because I found not Titus my brother: but bidding them farewell, I went into Macedonia.
13 but my mind could not rest because I did not find my brother Titus there. So I said farewell to them and went on to Macedonia.
14 Now thanks be to God, who always maketh us to triumph in Christ Jesus and manifesteth the odour of his knowledge by us in every place.
14 But thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession, and through us spreads in every place the fragrance that comes from knowing him.
15 For we are the good odour of Christ unto God, in them that are saved and in them that perish.
15 For we are the aroma of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing;
16 To the one indeed the odour of death unto death: but to the others the odour of life unto life. And for these things who is so sufficient?
16 to the one a fragrance from death to death, to the other a fragrance from life to life. Who is sufficient for these things?
17 For we are not as many, adulterating the word of God: but with sincerity: but as from God, before God, in Christ we speak.
17 For we are not peddlers of God's word like so many; but in Christ we speak as persons of sincerity, as persons sent from God and standing in his presence.
