1 Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

Therefore, since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God.
2 Receive us; we have wronged no man, we have corrupted no man, we have defrauded no man.

Make room for us in your hearts. We have wronged no one, we have corrupted no one, we have exploited no one.
3 I speak <em>this</em> not to condemn <em>you</em>, for I have said before that ye are in our hearts to die and live together with <em>us</em>.

I do not say this to condemn you; I have said before that you have such a place in our hearts that we would live or die with you.
4 Great <em>is</em> my boldness of speech toward you, great <em>is</em> my glorying of you; I am filled with comfort, I am exceeding joyful in all our tribulation.

I have spoken to you with great frankness; I take great pride in you. I am greatly encouraged; in all our troubles my joy knows no bounds.
5 For, when we were come into Macedonia, our flesh had no rest, but we were troubled on every side; without <em>were</em> fightings, within <em>were</em> fears.

For when we came into Macedonia, we had no rest, but we were harassed at every turn—conflicts on the outside, fears within.
6 Nevertheless God, who comforts the humble, comforted us by the coming of Titus;

But God, who comforts the downcast, comforted us by the coming of Titus,
7 and not by his coming only, but by the consolation with which he was comforted in you when he told us your earnest desire, your mourning, your zeal for me so that I rejoiced the more.

and not only by his coming but also by the comfort you had given him. He told us about your longing for me, your deep sorrow, your ardent concern for me, so that my joy was greater than ever.
8 For though I made you sorry with a letter, I do not repent, though I did repent; for I perceive that the same epistle has made you sorry, though <em>it were</em> but for a season.

Even if I caused you sorrow by my letter, I do not regret it. Though I did regret it—I see that my letter hurt you, but only for a little while—
9 Now I rejoice, not that ye were made sorry, but that ye sorrowed to repentance; for ye were made sorry by God that ye might suffer no loss by us.

yet now I am happy, not because you were made sorry, but because your sorrow led you to repentance. For you became sorrowful as God intended and so were not harmed in any way by us.
10 For godly sorrow works repentance to salvation, of which there is no need to repented; but the sorrow of the world works death.

Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death.
11 For behold this same thing, that <em>when</em> ye were made sorry by God, what carefulness it wrought in you, <em>what</em> clearing of yourselves, <em>what</em> indignation, <em>what</em> fear, <em>what</em> vehement desire, <em>what</em> zeal, <em>what</em> vindication! In all <em>things</em> ye have shown yourselves to be clean in this matter.

See what this godly sorrow has produced in you: what earnestness, what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what alarm, what longing, what concern, what readiness to see justice done. At every point you have proved yourselves to be innocent in this matter.
12 So that, though I wrote unto you, <em>I did it</em> not <em>only</em> for his cause that had done the wrong, nor for his cause that suffered wrong, but that our care for you in the sight of God might appear unto you.

So even though I wrote to you, it was neither on account of the one who did the wrong nor on account of the injured party, but rather that before God you could see for yourselves how devoted to us you are.
13 Therefore we were comforted in your comfort; yea, and we rejoiced even more exceedingly for the joy of Titus, because his spirit was refreshed by you all.

By all this we are encouraged. In addition to our own encouragement, we were especially delighted to see how happy Titus was, because his spirit has been refreshed by all of you.
14 For if I have gloried of anything to him of you, I am not ashamed; but as we spoke all things to you in truth, even so our glorying, which <em>I made</em> before Titus, was found true.

I had boasted to him about you, and you have not embarrassed me. But just as everything we said to you was true, so our boasting about you to Titus has proved to be true as well.
15 And his inward affection is more abundant toward you while he remembers the obedience of you all, how with fear and trembling ye received him.

And his affection for you is all the greater when he remembers that you were all obedient, receiving him with fear and trembling.
16 I rejoice therefore that I have confidence in you in all <em>things</em>.

I am glad I can have complete confidence in you.
