1 Amaziah, the son of Judah's King Jehoash, became king in the second year of Israel's King Joash, who was Jehoahaz's son.
1
In the second year of Jehoash son of Jehoahaz king of Israel, Amaziah son of Joash became king of Judah.
2 Amaziah was 25 years old when he became king, and he ruled for twenty-nine years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Jehoaddin; she was from Jerusalem.
2
He was twenty-five years old when he became king and he reigned for twenty-nine years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Jehoaddin. She was from Jerusalem.
3 He did what was right in the LORD's eyes, but not as well as his ancestor King David. He did everything his father Jehoash did.
3
He lived the way God wanted and did the right thing. But he didn't come up to the standards of his ancestor David; instead he lived pretty much as his father Joash had;
4 However, the shrines weren't removed. People kept sacrificing and burning incense at them.
4
the local sex-and-religion shrines continued to stay in business with people frequenting them.
5 Once he had secured control over his kingdom, he executed the officials who had assassinated his father the king.
5
When he had the affairs of the kingdom well in hand, he executed the palace guard that had assassinated his father the king.
6 However, he didn't kill the children of the murderers, because of what is written in the Instruction scroll from Moses, where the LORD commanded, Parents shouldn't be executed because of what their children have done; neither should children be executed because of what their parents have done. Each person should be executed for their own guilty acts.
6
But he didn't kill the sons of the assassins. He was obedient to what God commanded, written in the Word revealed to Moses, that parents shouldn't be executed for their children's sins, nor children for those of their parents. We each pay personally for our sins.
7 Next Amaziah struck down ten thousand Edomites in the Salt Valley and captured Sela in battle. He renamed it Jokthe-el, which is what it is still called today.
7
Amaziah roundly defeated Edom in the Valley of Salt to the tune of ten thousand dead. In another battle he took The Rock and renamed it Joktheel, the name it still bears.
8 Then Amaziah sent messengers to Israel's King Joash son of Jehoahaz son of Israel's King Jehu, saying, "Come on! Let's go head-to-head."
8
One day Amaziah sent envoys to Jehoash son of Jehoahaz, the son of Jehu, king of Israel, challenging him to a fight: "Come and meet with me - I dare you. Let's have it out face to face!"
9 But Israel's King Joash responded to Judah's King Amaziah, "Once upon a time, a thistle in Lebanon sent a message to a cedar, ‘Give your daughter to my son as a wife.' But then a wild beast in Lebanon came along and trampled the thistle.
9
Jehoash king of Israel replied to Amaziah king of Judah, "One day a thistle in Lebanon sent word to a cedar in Lebanon, 'Give your daughter to my son in marriage.' But then a wild animal of Lebanon passed by and stepped on the thistle, crushing it.
10 You have definitely defeated Edom and have now become conceited. Enjoy the honor, but stay home. Why invite disaster when both you and Judah will fall?"
10
Just because you've defeated Edom in battle, you now think you're a big shot. Go ahead and be proud, but stay home. Why press your luck? Why bring defeat on yourself and Judah?"
11 But Amaziah wouldn't listen, so Israel's King Joash moved against him, and he and Judah's King Amaziah went head-to-head in battle at Beth-shemesh in Judah.
11
Amaziah wouldn't take No for an answer. So Jehoash king of Israel gave in and agreed to a battle between him and Amaziah king of Judah. They met at Beth Shemesh, a town of Judah.
12 Judah was defeated by Israel, and everyone ran home.
12
Judah was thoroughly beaten by Israel - all their soldiers ran home in defeat.
13 At Beth-shemesh, Israel's King Joash captured Judah's King Amaziah, Jehoash's son and Ahaziah's grandson. Joash then marched to Jerusalem and broke down six hundred feet of the Jerusalem wall from the Ephraim Gate to the Corner Gate.
13
Jehoash king of Israel captured Amaziah king of Judah, the son of Joash, the son of Ahaziah, at Beth Shemesh. But Jehoash didn't stop there; he went on to attack Jerusalem. He demolished the wall of Jerusalem all the way from the Ephraim Gate to the Corner Gate - a stretch of about 600 feet.
14 Joash took all the gold and silver, and all the objects he could find in the LORD's temple and the treasuries of the palace, along with some hostages and returned to Samaria.
14
He looted the gold, silver, and furnishings - anything he found that was worth taking - from both the palace and The Temple of God. And, for good measure, he took hostages. Then he returned to Samaria.
15 The rest of Joash's deeds and his powerful acts—how he fought against Judah's King Amaziah—aren't they written in the official records of Israel's kings?
15
The rest of the life and times of Jehoash, his significant accomplishments and the fight with Amaziah king of Judah, are all written in The Chronicles of the Kings of Israel.
16 Joash lay down with his ancestors. He was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel. His son Jeroboam succeeded him as king.
16
Jehoash died and was buried in Samaria in the cemetery of the kings of Israel. His son Jeroboam became the next king.
17 Judah's King Amaziah, Jehoash's son, lived fifteen years after the death of Israel's King Joash, Jehoahaz's son.
17
Amaziah son of Joash king of Judah continued as king fifteen years after the death of Jehoash son of Jehoahaz king of Israel.
18 The rest of Amaziah's deeds, aren't they written in the official records of Judah's kings?
18
The rest of the life and times of Amaziah is written in The Chronicles of the Kings of Judah.
19 Some people in Jerusalem plotted against him. When Amaziah fled to Lachish, they sent men after him to Lachish, and they murdered him there.
19
At the last they cooked up a plot against Amaziah in Jerusalem and he had to flee to Lachish. But they tracked him down in Lachish and killed him there.
20 They carried him back on horses, and he was buried in Jerusalem with his ancestors in David's City.
20
They brought him back on horseback and buried him in Jerusalem, with his ancestors in the City of David.
21 Then all the people of Judah took Azariah and made him king after his father Amaziah. He was 16 years old.
21
Azariah - he was only sixteen years old at the time - was the unanimous choice of the people of Judah to succeed his father Amaziah as king.
22 He rebuilt Elath, restoring it to Judah after King Amaziah had lain down with his ancestors.
22
Following his father's death, he rebuilt and restored Elath to Judah.
23 Jeroboam, the son of Israel's King Joash, became king in Samaria in the fifteenth year of Judah's King Amaziah, Jehoash's son. He ruled for forty-one years.
23
In the fifteenth year of Amaziah son of Joash king of Judah, Jeroboam son of Jehoash became king of Israel in Samaria. He ruled for forty-one years.
24 He did what was evil in the LORD's eyes. He didn't deviate from all the sins that Jeroboam, Nebat's son, had caused Israel to commit.
24
As far as God was concerned he lived an evil life, never deviating an inch from all the sin of Jeroboam son of Nebat, who led Israel into a life of sin.
25 He reestablished Israel's border from Lebo-hamath to the Dead Sea. This was in agreement with the word that the LORD, the God of Israel, spoke through his servant the prophet Jonah, Amittai's son, who was from Gath-hepher.
25
But he did restore the borders of Israel to Lebo Hamath in the far north and to the Dead Sea in the south, matching what God, the God of Israel, had pronounced through his servant Jonah son of Amittai, the prophet from Gath Hepher.
26 The LORD saw how brutally Israel suffered, whether slave or free, with no one to help Israel.
26
God was fully aware of the trouble in Israel, its bitterly hard times. No one was exempt, whether slave or citizen, and no hope of help anywhere was in sight.
27 But the LORD hadn't said he would erase Israel's name from under heaven, so he saved them through Jeroboam, Joash's son.
27
But God wasn't yet ready to blot out the name of Israel from history, so he used Jeroboam son of Jehoash to save them.
28 The rest of Jeroboam's deeds, all that he accomplished, and his powerful acts—how he fought and how he restored Damascus and Hamath to Judah in Israel—aren't they written in the official records of Israel's kings?
28
The rest of the life and times of Jeroboam, his victories in battle and how he recovered for Israel both Damascus and Hamath which had belonged to Judah, these are all written in The Chronicles of the Kings of Israel.
29 Jeroboam lay down with his ancestors the kings of Israel. His son Zechariah succeeded him as king.
29
Jeroboam died and was buried with his ancestors in the royal cemetery. His son Zechariah became the next king.
