CEB 1 Theophilus, the first scroll I wrote concerned everything Jesus did and taught from the beginning, NIV 1 In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach CEB 2 right up to the day when he was taken up into heaven. Before he was taken up, working in the power of the Holy Spirit, Jesus instructed the apostles he had chosen. NIV 2 until the day he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen. CEB 3 After his suffering, he showed them that he was alive with many convincing proofs. He appeared to them over a period of forty days, speaking to them about God's kingdom. NIV 3 After his suffering, he presented himself to them and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God. CEB 4 While they were eating together, he ordered them not to leave Jerusalem but to wait for what the Father had promised. He said, "This is what you heard from me: NIV 4 On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. CEB 5 John baptized with water, but in only a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit." NIV 5 For John baptized withwater, but in a few days you will be baptized withthe Holy Spirit.” CEB 6 As a result, those who had gathered together asked Jesus, "Lord, are you going to restore the kingdom to Israel now?" NIV 6 Then they gathered around him and asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?” CEB 7 Jesus replied, "It isn't for you to know the times or seasons that the Father has set by his own authority. NIV 7 He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. CEB 8 Rather, you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth." NIV 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” CEB 9 After Jesus said these things, as they were watching, he was lifted up and a cloud took him out of their sight. NIV 9 After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight. CEB 10 While he was going away and as they were staring toward heaven, suddenly two men in white robes stood next to them. NIV 10 They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. CEB 11 They said, "Galileans, why are you standing here, looking toward heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way that you saw him go into heaven." NIV 11 “Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.” CEB 12 Then they returned to Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives, which is near Jerusalem—a sabbath day's journey away. NIV 12 Then the apostles returned to Jerusalem from the hill called the Mount of Olives, a Sabbath day’s walk from the city. CEB 13 When they entered the city, they went to the upstairs room where they were staying. Peter, John, James, and Andrew; Philip and Thomas; Bartholomew and Matthew; James, Alphaeus' son; Simon the zealot; and Judas, James' son— NIV 13 When they arrived, they went upstairs to the room where they were staying. Those present were Peter, John, James and Andrew; Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew; James son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James. CEB 14 all were united in their devotion to prayer, along with some women, including Mary the mother of Jesus, and his brothers. NIV 14 They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers. CEB 15 During this time, the family of believers was a company of about one hundred twenty persons. Peter stood among them and said, NIV 15 In those days Peter stood up among the believers (a group numbering about a hundred and twenty) CEB 16 "Brothers and sisters, the scripture that the Holy Spirit announced beforehand through David had to be fulfilled. This was the scripture concerning Judas, who became a guide for those who arrested Jesus. NIV 16 and said, “Brothers and sisters, the Scripture had to be fulfilled in which the Holy Spirit spoke long ago through David concerning Judas, who served as guide for those who arrested Jesus. CEB 17 This happened even though he was one of us and received a share of this ministry." ( NIV 17 He was one of our number and shared in our ministry.” CEB 18 In fact, he bought a field with the payment he received for his injustice. Falling headfirst, he burst open in the middle and all his intestines spilled out. NIV 18 (With the payment he received for his wickedness, Judas bought a field; there he fell headlong, his body burst open and all his intestines spilled out. CEB 19 This became known to everyone living in Jerusalem, so they called that field in their own language Hakeldama, or "Field of Blood.") NIV 19 Everyone in Jerusalem heard about this, so they called that field in their language Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood.) CEB 20 “It is written in the Psalms scroll, Let his home become deserted and let there be no one living in it; and Give his position of leadership to another. NIV 20 “For,” said Peter, “it is written in the Book of Psalms: “ ‘May his place be deserted; let there be no one to dwell in it,’and, “ ‘May another take his place of leadership.’ CEB 21 "Therefore, we must select one of those who have accompanied us during the whole time the Lord Jesus lived among us, NIV 21 Therefore it is necessary to choose one of the men who have been with us the whole time the Lord Jesus was living among us, CEB 22 beginning from the baptism of John until the day when Jesus was taken from us. This person must become along with us a witness to his resurrection." NIV 22 beginning from John’s baptism to the time when Jesus was taken up from us. For one of these must become a witness with us of his resurrection.” CEB 23 So they nominated two: Joseph called Barsabbas, who was also known as Justus, and Matthias. NIV 23 So they nominated two men: Joseph called Barsabbas (also known as Justus) and Matthias. CEB 24 They prayed, "Lord, you know everyone's deepest thoughts and desires. Show us clearly which one you have chosen from among these two NIV 24 Then they prayed, “Lord, you know everyone’s heart. Show us which of these two you have chosen CEB 25 to take the place of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas turned away to go to his own place." NIV 25 to take over this apostolic ministry, which Judas left to go where he belongs.” CEB 26 When they cast lots, the lot fell on Matthias. He was added to the eleven apostles. NIV 26 Then they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias; so he was added to the eleven apostles.
