Exodus 20

CSB 1 Then God spoke all these words: NIV 1 And God spoke all these words: CSB 2 I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the place of slavery. NIV 2 “I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. CSB 3 Do not have other gods besides Me. NIV 3 “You shall have no other gods before me. CSB 4 Do not make an idol for yourself, whether in the shape of anything in the heavens above or on the earth below or in the waters under the earth. NIV 4 “You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. CSB 5 You must not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the fathers' sin, to the third and fourth [generations] of those who hate Me, NIV 5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, CSB 6 but showing faithful love to a thousand [generations] of those who love Me and keep My commands. NIV 6 but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments. CSB 7 Do not misuse the name of the Lord your God, because the Lord will punish anyone who misuses His name. NIV 7 “You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name. CSB 8 Remember to dedicate the Sabbath day: NIV 8 “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. CSB 9 You are to labor six days and do all your work, NIV 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, CSB 10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. You must not do any work-you, your son or daughter, your male or female slave, your livestock, or the foreigner who is within your gates. NIV 10 but the seventh day is a sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. CSB 11 For the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and everything in them in six days; then He rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and declared it holy. NIV 11 For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy. CSB 12 Honor your father and your mother so that you may have a long life in the land that the Lord your God is giving you. NIV 12 “Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you. CSB 13 Do not murder. NIV 13 “You shall not murder. CSB 14 Do not commit adultery. NIV 14 “You shall not commit adultery. CSB 15 Do not steal. NIV 15 “You shall not steal. CSB 16 Do not give false testimony against your neighbor. NIV 16 “You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor. CSB 17 Do not covet your neighbor's house. Do not covet your neighbor's wife, his male or female slave, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor. NIV 17 “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.” CSB 18 All the people witnessed the thunder and lightning, the sound of the trumpet, and the mountain [surrounded by] smoke. When the people saw [it] they trembled and stood at a distance. NIV 18 When the people saw the thunder and lightning and heard the trumpet and saw the mountain in smoke, they trembled with fear. They stayed at a distance CSB 19 "You speak to us, and we will listen," they said to Moses, "but don't let God speak to us, or we will die." NIV 19 and said to Moses, “Speak to us yourself and we will listen. But do not have God speak to us or we will die.” CSB 20 Moses responded to the people, "Don't be afraid, for God has come to test you, so that you will fear Him and will not sin." NIV 20 Moses said to the people, “Do not be afraid. God has come to test you, so that the fear of God will be with you to keep you from sinning.” CSB 21 And the people remained standing at a distance as Moses approached the thick darkness where God was. NIV 21 The people remained at a distance, while Moses approached the thick darkness where God was. CSB 22 Then the Lord told Moses, "This is what you are to say to the Israelites: You have seen that I have spoken to you from heaven. NIV 22 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Tell the Israelites this: ‘You have seen for yourselves that I have spoken to you from heaven: CSB 23 You must not make gods of silver to rival Me; you must not make [gods of gold] for yourselves. NIV 23 Do not make any gods to be alongside me; do not make for yourselves gods of silver or gods of gold. CSB 24 "You must make an earthen altar for Me and sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and fellowship offerings, your sheep and goats, as well as your cattle. I will come to you and bless you in every place where I cause My name to be remembered. NIV 24 “ ‘Make an altar of earth for me and sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and fellowship offerings, your sheep and goats and your cattle. Wherever I cause my name to be honored, I will come to you and bless you. CSB 25 If you make a stone altar for Me, you must not build it out of cut stones. If you use your chisel on it, you will defile it. NIV 25 If you make an altar of stones for me, do not build it with dressed stones, for you will defile it if you use a tool on it. CSB 26 You must not go up to My altar on steps, so that your nakedness is not exposed on it. NIV 26 And do not go up to my altar on steps, or your private parts may be exposed.’
