Exodus 24

CEB 1 Then the LORD said to Moses, "Come up to the LORD, you and Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, and seventy of Israel's elders, and worship from a distance. NRS 1 Then he said to Moses, "Come up to the Lord, you and Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel, and worship at a distance. CEB 2 Only Moses may come near to the LORD. The others shouldn't come near, while the people shouldn't come up with him at all." NRS 2 Moses alone shall come near the Lord; but the others shall not come near, and the people shall not come up with him." CEB 3 Moses came and told the people all the LORD's words and all the case laws. All the people answered in unison, "Everything that the LORD has said we will do." NRS 3 Moses came and told the people all the words of the Lord and all the ordinances; and all the people answered with one voice, and said, "All the words that the Lord has spoken we will do." CEB 4 Moses then wrote down all the LORD's words. He got up early in the morning and built an altar at the foot of the mountain. He set up twelve sacred stone pillars for the twelve tribes of Israel. NRS 4 And Moses wrote down all the words of the Lord. He rose early in the morning, and built an altar at the foot of the mountain, and set up twelve pillars, corresponding to the twelve tribes of Israel. CEB 5 He appointed certain young Israelite men to offer entirely burned offerings and slaughter oxen as well-being sacrifices to the LORD. NRS 5 He sent young men of the people of Israel, who offered burnt offerings and sacrificed oxen as offerings of well-being to the Lord. CEB 6 Moses took half of the blood and put it in large bowls. The other half of the blood he threw against the altar. NRS 6 Moses took half of the blood and put it in basins, and half of the blood he dashed against the altar. CEB 7 Then he took the covenant scroll and read it out loud for the people to hear. They responded, "Everything that the LORD has said we will do, and we will obey." NRS 7 Then he took the book of the covenant, and read it in the hearing of the people; and they said, "All that the Lord has spoken we will do, and we will be obedient." CEB 8 Moses then took the blood and threw it over the people. Moses said, "This is the blood of the covenant that the LORD now makes with you on the basis of all these words." NRS 8 Moses took the blood and dashed it on the people, and said, "See the blood of the covenant that the Lord has made with you in accordance with all these words." CEB 9 Then Moses and Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, and seventy elders of Israel went up, NRS 9 Then Moses and Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel went up, CEB 10 and they saw Israel's God. Under God's feet there was what looked like a floor of lapis-lazuli tiles, dazzlingly pure like the sky. NRS 10 and they saw the God of Israel. Under his feet there was something like a pavement of sapphire stone, like the very heaven for clearness. CEB 11 God didn't harm the Israelite leaders, though they looked at God, and they ate and drank. NRS 11 God did not lay his hand on the chief men of the people of Israel; also they beheld God, and they ate and drank. CEB 12 The LORD said to Moses, "Come up to me on the mountain and wait there. I'll give you the stone tablets with the instructions and the commandments that I've written in order to teach them." NRS 12 The Lord said to Moses, "Come up to me on the mountain, and wait there; and I will give you the tablets of stone, with the law and the commandment, which I have written for their instruction." CEB 13 So Moses and his assistant Joshua got up, and Moses went up God's mountain. NRS 13 So Moses set out with his assistant Joshua, and Moses went up into the mountain of God. CEB 14 Moses had said to the elders, "Wait for us here until we come back to you. Aaron and Hur will be here with you. Whoever has a legal dispute may go to them." NRS 14 To the elders he had said, "Wait here for us, until we come to you again; for Aaron and Hur are with you; whoever has a dispute may go to them." CEB 15 Then Moses went up the mountain, and the cloud covered the mountain. NRS 15 Then Moses went up on the mountain, and the cloud covered the mountain. CEB 16 The LORD's glorious presence settled on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it for six days. On the seventh day the LORD called to Moses from the cloud. NRS 16 The glory of the Lord settled on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it for six days; on the seventh day he called to Moses out of the cloud. CEB 17 To the Israelites, the LORD's glorious presence looked like a blazing fire on top of the mountain. NRS 17 Now the appearance of the glory of the Lord was like a devouring fire on the top of the mountain in the sight of the people of Israel. CEB 18 Moses entered the cloud and went up the mountain. Moses stayed on the mountain for forty days and forty nights. NRS 18 Moses entered the cloud, and went up on the mountain. Moses was on the mountain for forty days and forty nights.
