Ezekiel 18

NAS 1 Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying, NIV 1 The word of the LORD came to me: NAS 2 "What do you mean by using this proverb concerning the land of Israel, saying, 'The fathers eat the sour grapes, But the children's teeth are set on edge '? NIV 2 “What do you people mean by quoting this proverb about the land of Israel: “ ‘The parents eat sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge’? NAS 3 "As I live," declares the Lord GOD, "you are surely not going to use this proverb in Israel anymore. NIV 3 “As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign LORD, you will no longer quote this proverb in Israel. NAS 4 "Behold, all souls are Mine; the soul of the father as well as the soul of the son is Mine. The soul who sins will die. NIV 4 For everyone belongs to me, the parent as well as the child—both alike belong to me. The one who sins is the one who will die. NAS 5 "But if a man is righteous and practices justice and righteousness, NIV 5 “Suppose there is a righteous man who does what is just and right. NAS 6 and does not eat at the mountain shrines or lift up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, or defile his neighbor's wife or approach a woman during her menstrual period - NIV 6 He does not eat at the mountain shrines or look to the idols of Israel. He does not defile his neighbor’s wife or have sexual relations with a woman during her period. NAS 7 if a man does not oppress anyone, but restores to the debtor his pledge, does not commit robbery, but gives his bread to the hungry and covers the naked with clothing, NIV 7 He does not oppress anyone, but returns what he took in pledge for a loan. He does not commit robbery but gives his food to the hungry and provides clothing for the naked. NAS 8 if he does not lend money on interest or take increase, if he keeps his hand from iniquity and executes true justice between man and man, NIV 8 He does not lend to them at interest or take a profit from them. He withholds his hand from doing wrong and judges fairly between two parties. NAS 9 if he walks in My statutes and My ordinances so as to deal faithfully -he is righteous and will surely live," declares the Lord GOD. NIV 9 He follows my decrees and faithfully keeps my laws. That man is righteous; he will surely live, declares the Sovereign LORD. NAS 10 "Then he may have a violent son who sheds blood and who does any of these things to a brother NIV 10 “Suppose he has a violent son, who sheds blood or does any of these other things NAS 11 (though he himself did not do any of these things ), that is, he even eats at the mountain shrines, and defiles his neighbor's wife, NIV 11 (though the father has done none of them): “He eats at the mountain shrines. He defiles his neighbor’s wife. NAS 12 oppresses the poor and needy, commits robbery, does not restore a pledge, but lifts up his eyes to the idols and commits abomination, NIV 12 He oppresses the poor and needy. He commits robbery. He does not return what he took in pledge. He looks to the idols. He does detestable things. NAS 13 he lends money on interest and takes increase; will he live? He will not live! He has committed all these abominations, he will surely be put to death; his blood will be on his own head. NIV 13 He lends at interest and takes a profit. Will such a man live? He will not! Because he has done all these detestable things, he is to be put to death; his blood will be on his own head. NAS 14 "Now behold, he has a son who has observed all his father's sins which he committed, and observing does not do likewise. NIV 14 “But suppose this son has a son who sees all the sins his father commits, and though he sees them, he does not do such things: NAS 15 "He does not eat at the mountain shrines or lift up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, or defile his neighbor's wife, NIV 15 “He does not eat at the mountain shrines or look to the idols of Israel. He does not defile his neighbor’s wife. NAS 16 or oppress anyone, or retain a pledge, or commit robbery, but he gives his bread to the hungry and covers the naked with clothing, NIV 16 He does not oppress anyone or require a pledge for a loan. NAS 17 he keeps his hand from the poor, does not take interest or increase, but executes My ordinances, and walks in My statutes; he will not die for his father's iniquity, he will surely live. NIV 17 He withholds his hand from mistreating the poor and takes no interest or profit from them. He keeps my laws and follows my decrees. He will not die for his father’s sin; he will surely live. NAS 18 "As for his father, because he practiced extortion, robbed his brother and did what was not good among his people, behold, he will die for his iniquity. NIV 18 But his father will die for his own sin, because he practiced extortion, robbed his brother and did what was wrong among his people. NAS 19 "Yet you say, 'Why should the son not bear the punishment for the father's iniquity?' When the son has practiced justice and righteousness and has observed all My statutes and done them, he shall surely live. NIV 19 “Yet you ask, ‘Why does the son not share the guilt of his father?’ Since the son has done what is just and right and has been careful to keep all my decrees, he will surely live. NAS 20 "The person who sins will die. The son will not bear the punishment for the father's iniquity, nor will the father bear the punishment for the son's iniquity; the righteousness of the righteous will be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked will be upon himself. NIV 20 The one who sins is the one who will die. The child will not share the guilt of the parent, nor will the parent share the guilt of the child. The righteousness of the righteous will be credited to them, and the wickedness of the wicked will be charged against them. NAS 21 "But if the wicked man turns from all his sins which he has committed and observes all My statutes and practices justice and righteousness, he shall surely live; he shall not die. NIV 21 “But if a wicked person turns away from all the sins they have committed and keeps all my decrees and does what is just and right, that person will surely live; they will not die. NAS 22 "All his transgressions which he has committed will not be remembered against him; because of his righteousness which he has practiced, he will live. NIV 22 None of the offenses they have committed will be remembered against them. Because of the righteous things they have done, they will live. NAS 23 "Do I have any pleasure in the death of the wicked," declares the Lord GOD, "rather than that he should turn from his ways and live? NIV 23 Do I take any pleasure in the death of the wicked? declares the Sovereign LORD. Rather, am I not pleased when they turn from their ways and live? NAS 24 "But when a righteous man turns away from his righteousness, commits iniquity and does according to all the abominations that a wicked man does, will he live? All his righteous deeds which he has done will not be remembered for his treachery which he has committed and his sin which he has committed; for them he will die. NIV 24 “But if a righteous person turns from their righteousness and commits sin and does the same detestable things the wicked person does, will they live? None of the righteous things that person has done will be remembered. Because of the unfaithfulness they are guilty of and because of the sins they have committed, they will die. NAS 25 "Yet you say, 'The way of the Lord is not right.' Hear now, O house of Israel! Is My way not right? Is it not your ways that are not right? NIV 25 “Yet you say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ Hear, you Israelites: Is my way unjust? Is it not your ways that are unjust? NAS 26 "When a righteous man turns away from his righteousness, commits iniquity and dies because of it, for his iniquity which he has committed he will die. NIV 26 If a righteous person turns from their righteousness and commits sin, they will die for it; because of the sin they have committed they will die. NAS 27 "Again, when a wicked man turns away from his wickedness which he has committed and practices justice and righteousness, he will save his life. NIV 27 But if a wicked person turns away from the wickedness they have committed and does what is just and right, they will save their life. NAS 28 "Because he considered and turned away from all his transgressions which he had committed, he shall surely live; he shall not die. NIV 28 Because they consider all the offenses they have committed and turn away from them, that person will surely live; they will not die. NAS 29 "But the house of Israel says, 'The way of the Lord is not right.' Are My ways not right, O house of Israel? Is it not your ways that are not right? NIV 29 Yet the Israelites say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ Are my ways unjust, people of Israel? Is it not your ways that are unjust? NAS 30 "Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, each according to his conduct," declares the Lord GOD. "Repent and turn away from all your transgressions, so that iniquity may not become a stumbling block to you. NIV 30 “Therefore, you Israelites, I will judge each of you according to your own ways, declares the Sovereign LORD. Repent! Turn away from all your offenses; then sin will not be your downfall. NAS 31 "Cast away from you all your transgressions which you have committed and make yourselves a new heart and a new spirit! For why will you die, O house of Israel? NIV 31 Rid yourselves of all the offenses you have committed, and get a new heart and a new spirit. Why will you die, people of Israel? NAS 32 "For I have no pleasure in the death of anyone who dies," declares the Lord GOD. "Therefore, repent and live." NIV 32 For I take no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Sovereign LORD. Repent and live!
