Isaiah 11

CEB 1 A shoot will grow up from the stump of Jesse; a branch will sprout from his roots. NRS 1 A shoot shall come out from the stump of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots. CEB 2 The LORD's spirit will rest upon him, a spirit of wisdom and understanding, a spirit of planning and strength, a spirit of knowledge and fear of the LORD. NRS 2 The spirit of the Lord shall rest on him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord. CEB 3 He will delight in fearing the LORD. He won't judge by appearances, nor decide by hearsay. NRS 3 His delight shall be in the fear of the Lord. He shall not judge by what his eyes see, or decide by what his ears hear; CEB 4 He will judge the needy with righteousness, and decide with equity for those who suffer in the land. He will strike the violent with the rod of his mouth; by the breath of his lips he will kill the wicked. NRS 4 but with righteousness he shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth; he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked. CEB 5 Righteousness will be the belt around his hips, and faithfulness the belt around his waist. NRS 5 Righteousness shall be the belt around his waist, and faithfulness the belt around his loins. CEB 6 The wolf will live with the lamb, and the leopard will lie down with the young goat; the calf and the young lion will feed together, and a little child will lead them. NRS 6 The wolf shall live with the lamb, the leopard shall lie down with the kid, the calf and the lion and the fatling together, and a little child shall lead them. CEB 7 The cow and the bear will graze. Their young will lie down together, and a lion will eat straw like an ox. NRS 7 The cow and the bear shall graze, their young shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. CEB 8 A nursing child will play over the snake's hole; toddlers will reach right over the serpent's den. NRS 8 The nursing child shall play over the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put its hand on the adder's den. CEB 9 They won't harm or destroy anywhere on my holy mountain. The earth will surely be filled with the knowledge of the LORD, just as the water covers the sea. NRS 9 They will not hurt or destroy on all my holy mountain; for the earth will be full of the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea. CEB 10 On that day, the root of Jesse will stand as a signal to the peoples. The nations will seek him out, and his dwelling will be glorious. NRS 10 On that day the root of Jesse shall stand as a signal to the peoples; the nations shall inquire of him, and his dwelling shall be glorious. CEB 11 On that day, the Lord will extend his hand a second time to reclaim the survivors of God's people who are left from Assyria and from Egypt, from Pathros, Cush, Elam, Shinar, Hamath, and from the coastlands of the sea. NRS 11 On that day the Lord will extend his hand yet a second time to recover the remnant that is left of his people, from Assyria, from Egypt, from Pathros, from Ethiopia, from Elam, from Shinar, from Hamath, and from the coastlands of the sea. CEB 12 God will raise a signal for the nations and gather the outcast men of Israel. God will collect the dispersed women of Judah from the four corners of the earth. NRS 12 He will raise a signal for the nations, and will assemble the outcasts of Israel, and gather the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth. CEB 13 Ephraim's jealousy will cease, and Judah's harassment will be eliminated. Ephraim won't be jealous of Judah, and Judah won't harass Ephraim. NRS 13 The jealousy of Ephraim shall depart, the hostility of Judah shall be cut off; Ephraim shall not be jealous of Judah, and Judah shall not be hostile towards Ephraim. CEB 14 But they will swoop down on the slopes of Philistia to the west; together they will plunder the people to the east. Edom and Moab will be under their power, and the Ammonites will be their subjects. NRS 14 But they shall swoop down on the backs of the Philistines in the west, together they shall plunder the people of the east. They shall put forth their hand against Edom and Moab, and the Ammonites shall obey them. CEB 15 The LORD will split the tongue of the Egyptian sea. God will wave a hand over the Euphrates with a powerful wind and break it into seven streams so that it can be crossed in sandals. NRS 15 And the Lord will utterly destroy the tongue of the sea of Egypt; and will wave his hand over the River with his scorching wind; and will split it into seven channels, and make a way to cross on foot; CEB 16 Then there will be a highway from Assyria for the survivors of God's people who are left from Assyria, just as there was for Israel on the day they went up from the land of Egypt. NRS 16 so there shall be a highway from Assyria for the remnant that is left of his people, as there was for Israel when they came up from the land of Egypt.
