Isaiah 48

CEB 1 Listen to this, house of Jacob, who are known by the name of Israel, descendants of Judah, who swear by the LORD's name and invoke Israel's God dishonestly and unrighteously. NRS 1 Hear this, O house of Jacob, who are called by the name of Israel, and who came forth from the loins of Judah; who swear by the name of the Lord, and invoke the God of Israel, but not in truth or right. CEB 2 They are known as residents of the holy city, those who depend upon the God of Israel— the LORD of heavenly forces is his name. NRS 2 For they call themselves after the holy city, and lean on the God of Israel; the Lord of hosts is his name. CEB 3 Past things I announced long ago; from my mouth I proclaimed them. I acted suddenly, and they came about. NRS 3 The former things I declared long ago, they went out from my mouth and I made them known; then suddenly I did them and they came to pass. CEB 4 Because I know that you are stubborn, your neck is made of iron, and your forehead is bronze. NRS 4 Because I know that you are obstinate, and your neck is an iron sinew and your forehead brass, CEB 5 I informed you long ago; before they came about I proclaimed them to you so you wouldn't say, "My idol did them; my wood statue and metal god commanded them." NRS 5 I declared them to you from long ago, before they came to pass I announced them to you, so that you would not say, "My idol did them, my carved image and my cast image commanded them." CEB 6 You've heard and seen all this— won't you admit it? From now on I'll tell you new things, guarded secrets that you don't know. NRS 6 You have heard; now see all this; and will you not declare it? From this time forward I make you hear new things, hidden things that you have not known. CEB 7 They are created now, not long ago; before today you hadn't heard of them, so you won't say, "I already knew them." NRS 7 They are created now, not long ago; before today you have never heard of them, so that you could not say, "I already knew them." CEB 8 You haven't heard, nor have you known; as in ages past your ears are closed, because I knew what a traitor you were; you were known as a rebel from birth. NRS 8 You have never heard, you have never known, from of old your ear has not been opened. For I knew that you would deal very treacherously, and that from birth you were called a rebel. CEB 9 For the sake of my reputation I control my anger; for your sake I restrain my powerful radiance so as to not destroy you. NRS 9 For my name's sake I defer my anger, for the sake of my praise I restrain it for you, so that I may not cut you off. CEB 10 See, I have refined you, but not like silver; I have tested you in the furnace of misery. NRS 10 See, I have refined you, but not like silver; I have tested you in the furnace of adversity. CEB 11 For the sake of my reputation, for my own sake, I will act, for why will my name be made impure? I won't give my glory to another. NRS 11 For my own sake, for my own sake, I do it, for why should my name be profaned? My glory I will not give to another. CEB 12 Listen to me, Jacob; Israel, whom I called: I am the one; I am the first and I am the last. NRS 12 Listen to me, O Jacob, and Israel, whom I called: I am He; I am the first, and I am the last. CEB 13 My hand founded the earth; my strong hand spread out the heavens. When I call to them, they all stand up. NRS 13 My hand laid the foundation of the earth, and my right hand spread out the heavens; when I summon them, they stand at attention. CEB 14 Gather yourselves, all of you, and listen. Who among you announced these things? "The LORD loves him. He will do what God wants with Babylon and with the descendants of Chaldea." NRS 14 Assemble, all of you, and hear! Who among them has declared these things? The Lord loves him; he shall perform his purpose on Babylon, and his arm shall be against the Chaldeans. CEB 15 I, I have spoken and told him the things that will happen to him; I will make him succeed. NRS 15 I, even I, have spoken and called him, I have brought him, and he will prosper in his way. CEB 16 Come close to me; listen to this: Since the very beginning I haven't spoken in secret. Whenever anything happens, I am there. (And now the LORD God has sent me with his spirit.) NRS 16 Draw near to me, hear this! From the beginning I have not spoken in secret, from the time it came to be I have been there. And now the Lord God has sent me and his spirit. CEB 17 The LORD your redeemer, the holy one of Israel, proclaims: I am the LORD your God who teaches you for your own good, who leads you in the way you should go. NRS 17 Thus says the Lord, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: I am the Lord your God, who teaches you for your own good, who leads you in the way you should go. CEB 18 If you would pay attention to my commands, your well-being would be like a river, and your righteousness like the waves of the sea. NRS 18 O that you had paid attention to my commandments! Then your prosperity would have been like a river, and your success like the waves of the sea; CEB 19 Your offspring would be like the sand, and your descendants like its grains. Their name would never be eliminated, never wiped out from before me. NRS 19 your offspring would have been like the sand, and your descendants like its grains; their name would never be cut off or destroyed from before me. CEB 20 Go out from Babylon; flee from the Chaldeans! Report this with a loud shout, proclaim it; broadcast it out to the end of the earth. Say, "The LORD has redeemed his servant Jacob!" NRS 20 Go out from Babylon, flee from Chaldea, declare this with a shout of joy, proclaim it, send it forth to the end of the earth; say, "The Lord has redeemed his servant Jacob!" CEB 21 They weren't thirsty when he led them through the deserts. God made water flow from the rock for them; split the rock, and water flowed out. NRS 21 They did not thirst when he led them through the deserts; he made water flow for them from the rock; he split open the rock and the water gushed out. CEB 22 There is no well-being, says the LORD, for the wicked. NRS 22 "There is no peace," says the Lord, "for the wicked."
