James 5

NAS 1 Come now, you rich, weep and howl for your miseries which are coming upon you. NIV 1 Now listen, you rich people, weep and wail because of the misery that is coming on you. NAS 2 Your riches have rotted and your garments have become moth-eaten. NIV 2 Your wealth has rotted, and moths have eaten your clothes. NAS 3 Your gold and your silver have rusted; and their rust will be a witness against you and will consume your flesh like fire. It is in the last days that you have stored up your treasure! NIV 3 Your gold and silver are corroded. Their corrosion will testify against you and eat your flesh like fire. You have hoarded wealth in the last days. NAS 4 Behold, the pay of the laborers who mowed your fields, and which has been withheld by you, cries out against you; and the outcry of those who did the harvesting has reached the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth. NIV 4 Look! The wages you failed to pay the workers who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord Almighty. NAS 5 You have lived luxuriously on the earth and led a life of wanton pleasure; you have fattened your hearts in a day of slaughter. NIV 5 You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence. You have fattened yourselves in the day of slaughter. NAS 6 You have condemned and put to death the righteous man; he does not resist you. NIV 6 You have condemned and murdered the innocent one, who was not opposing you. NAS 7 Therefore be patient, brethren, until the coming of the Lord . The farmer waits for the precious produce of the soil, being patient about it, until it gets the early and late rains. NIV 7 Be patient, then, brothers and sisters, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop, patiently waiting for the autumn and spring rains. NAS 8 You too be patient; strengthen your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is near. NIV 8 You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord’s coming is near. NAS 9 Do not complain, brethren, against one another, so that you yourselves may not be judged; behold, the Judge is standing right at the door. NIV 9 Don’t grumble against one another, brothers and sisters, or you will be judged. The Judge is standing at the door! NAS 10 As an example, brethren, of suffering and patience, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord . NIV 10 Brothers and sisters, as an example of patience in the face of suffering, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. NAS 11 We count those blessed who endured. You have heard of the endurance of Job and have seen the outcome of the Lord's dealings, that the Lord is full of compassion and is merciful. NIV 11 As you know, we count as blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of Job’s perseverance and have seen what the Lord finally brought about. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy. NAS 12 But above all, my brethren, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or with any other oath; but your yes is to be yes, and your no, no, so that you may not fall under judgment. NIV 12 Above all, my brothers and sisters, do not swear—not by heaven or by earth or by anything else. All you need to say is a simple “Yes” or “No.” Otherwise you will be condemned. NAS 13 Is anyone among you suffering? Then he must pray. Is anyone cheerful? He is to sing praises. NIV 13 Is anyone among you in trouble? Let them pray. Is anyone happy? Let them sing songs of praise. NAS 14 Is anyone among you sick? Then he must call for the elders of the church and they are to pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord ; NIV 14 Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. NAS 15 and the prayer offered in faith will restore the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up, and if he has committed sins, they will be forgiven him. NIV 15 And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven. NAS 16 Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another so that you may be healed. The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much. NIV 16 Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective. NAS 17 Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the earth for three years and six months. NIV 17 Elijah was a human being, even as we are. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years. NAS 18 Then he prayed again, and the sky poured rain and the earth produced its fruit. NIV 18 Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops. NAS 19 My brethren, if any among you strays from the truth and one turns him back, NIV 19 My brothers and sisters, if one of you should wander from the truth and someone should bring that person back, NAS 20 let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins. NIV 20 remember this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of their way will save them from death and cover over a multitude of sins.
