John 1

NLT 1 In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. NIV 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. NLT 2 He existed in the beginning with God. NIV 2 He was with God in the beginning. NLT 3 God created everything through him, and nothing was created except through him. NIV 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. NLT 4 The Word gave life to everything that was created, and his life brought light to everyone. NIV 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. NLT 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it. NIV 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. NLT 6 God sent a man, John the Baptist, NIV 6 There was a man sent from God whose name was John. NLT 7 to tell about the light so that everyone might believe because of his testimony. NIV 7 He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe. NLT 8 John himself was not the light; he was simply a witness to tell about the light. NIV 8 He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light. NLT 9 The one who is the true light, who gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. NIV 9 The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. NLT 10 He came into the very world he created, but the world didn’t recognize him. NIV 10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. NLT 11 He came to his own people, and even they rejected him. NIV 11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. NLT 12 But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God. NIV 12 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— NLT 13 They are reborn—not with a physical birth resulting from human passion or plan, but a birth that comes from God. NIV 13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God. NLT 14 So the Word became human and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son. NIV 14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. NLT 15 John testified about him when he shouted to the crowds, “This is the one I was talking about when I said, ‘Someone is coming after me who is far greater than I am, for he existed long before me.’” NIV 15 (John testified concerning him. He cried out, saying, “This is the one I spoke about when I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’ ”) NLT 16 From his abundance we have all received one gracious blessing after another. NIV 16 Out of his fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given. NLT 17 For the law was given through Moses, but God’s unfailing love and faithfulness came through Jesus Christ. NIV 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. NLT 18 No one has ever seen God. But the unique One, who is himself God, is near to the Father’s heart. He has revealed God to us. NIV 18 No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known. NLT 19 This was John’s testimony when the Jewish leaders sent priests and Temple assistants from Jerusalem to ask John, “Who are you?” NIV 19 Now this was John’s testimony when the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was. NLT 20 He came right out and said, “I am not the Messiah.” NIV 20 He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, “I am not the Messiah.” NLT 21 “Well then, who are you?” they asked. “Are you Elijah?” “No,” he replied. “Are you the Prophet we are expecting?” “No.” NIV 21 They asked him, “Then who are you? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” He answered, “No.” NLT 22 “Then who are you? We need an answer for those who sent us. What do you have to say about yourself?” NIV 22 Finally they said, “Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?” NLT 23 John replied in the words of the prophet Isaiah: “I am a voice shouting in the wilderness, ‘Clear the way for the LORD ’s coming!’” NIV 23 John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, “I am the voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way for the Lord.’ ” NLT 24 Then the Pharisees who had been sent NIV 24 Now the Pharisees who had been sent NLT 25 asked him, “If you aren’t the Messiah or Elijah or the Prophet, what right do you have to baptize?” NIV 25 questioned him, “Why then do you baptize if you are not the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?” NLT 26 John told them, “I baptize with water, but right here in the crowd is someone you do not recognize. NIV 26 “I baptize with water,” John replied, “but among you stands one you do not know. NLT 27 Though his ministry follows mine, I’m not even worthy to be his slave and untie the straps of his sandal.” NIV 27 He is the one who comes after me, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.” NLT 28 This encounter took place in Bethany, an area east of the Jordan River, where John was baptizing. NIV 28 This all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan, where John was baptizing. NLT 29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! NIV 29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! NLT 30 He is the one I was talking about when I said, ‘A man is coming after me who is far greater than I am, for he existed long before me.’ NIV 30 This is the one I meant when I said, ‘A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’ NLT 31 I did not recognize him as the Messiah, but I have been baptizing with water so that he might be revealed to Israel.” NIV 31 I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel.” NLT 32 Then John testified, “I saw the Holy Spirit descending like a dove from heaven and resting upon him. NIV 32 Then John gave this testimony: “I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him. NLT 33 I didn’t know he was the one, but when God sent me to baptize with water, he told me, ‘The one on whom you see the Spirit descend and rest is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’ NIV 33 And I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’ NLT 34 I saw this happen to Jesus, so I testify that he is the Chosen One of God. ” NIV 34 I have seen and I testify that this is God’s Chosen One.” NLT 35 The following day John was again standing with two of his disciples. NIV 35 The next day John was there again with two of his disciples. NLT 36 As Jesus walked by, John looked at him and declared, “Look! There is the Lamb of God!” NIV 36 When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!” NLT 37 When John’s two disciples heard this, they followed Jesus. NIV 37 When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus. NLT 38 Jesus looked around and saw them following. “What do you want?” he asked them. They replied, “Rabbi” (which means “Teacher”), “where are you staying?” NIV 38 Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, “What do you want?”They said, “Rabbi” (which means “Teacher”), “where are you staying?” NLT 39 “Come and see,” he said. It was about four o’clock in the afternoon when they went with him to the place where he was staying, and they remained with him the rest of the day. NIV 39 “Come,” he replied, “and you will see.”So they went and saw where he was staying, and they spent that day with him. It was about four in the afternoon. NLT 40 Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of these men who heard what John said and then followed Jesus. NIV 40 Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus. NLT 41 Andrew went to find his brother, Simon, and told him, “We have found the Messiah” (which means “Christ” ). NIV 41 The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, “We have found the Messiah” (that is, the Christ). NLT 42 Then Andrew brought Simon to meet Jesus. Looking intently at Simon, Jesus said, “Your name is Simon, son of John—but you will be called Cephas” (which means “Peter” ). NIV 42 And he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas” (which, when translated, is Peter ). NLT 43 The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, “Come, follow me.” NIV 43 The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip, he said to him, “Follow me.” NLT 44 Philip was from Bethsaida, Andrew and Peter’s hometown. NIV 44 Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida. NLT 45 Philip went to look for Nathanael and told him, “We have found the very person Moses and the prophets wrote about! His name is Jesus, the son of Joseph from Nazareth.” NIV 45 Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” NLT 46 “Nazareth!” exclaimed Nathanael. “Can anything good come from Nazareth?” “Come and see for yourself,” Philip replied. NIV 46 “Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?” Nathanael asked. “Come and see,” said Philip. NLT 47 As they approached, Jesus said, “Now here is a genuine son of Israel—a man of complete integrity.” NIV 47 When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, “Here truly is an Israelite in whom there is no deceit.” NLT 48 “How do you know about me?” Nathanael asked. Jesus replied, “I could see you under the fig tree before Philip found you.” NIV 48 “How do you know me?” Nathanael asked. Jesus answered, “I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you.” NLT 49 Then Nathanael exclaimed, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God—the King of Israel!” NIV 49 Then Nathanael declared, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the king of Israel.” NLT 50 Jesus asked him, “Do you believe this just because I told you I had seen you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than this.” NIV 50 Jesus said, “You believebecause I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things than that.” NLT 51 Then he said, “I tell you the truth, you will all see heaven open and the angels of God going up and down on the Son of Man, the one who is the stairway between heaven and earth. ” NIV 51 He then added, “Very truly I tell you, youwill see ‘heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on’the Son of Man.”
