John 16

ESV 1 "I have said all these things to you to keep you from falling away. MSG 1 "I've told you these things to prepare you for rough times ahead. ESV 2 They will put you out of the synagogues. Indeed, the hour is coming when whoever kills you will think he is offering service to God. MSG 2 They are going to throw you out of the meeting places. There will even come a time when anyone who kills you will think he's doing God a favor. ESV 3 And they will do these things because they have not known the Father, nor me. MSG 3 They will do these things because they never really understood the Father. ESV 4 But I have said these things to you, that when their hour comes you may remember that I told them to you. "I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you. MSG 4 I've told you these things so that when the time comes and they start in on you, you'll be well-warned and ready for them. ESV 5 But now I am going to him who sent me, and none of you asks me, 'Where are you going?' MSG 5 But now I am on my way to the One who sent me. Not one of you has asked, 'Where are you going?' ESV 6 But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. MSG 6 Instead, the longer I've talked, the sadder you've become. ESV 7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. MSG 7 So let me say it again, this truth: It's better for you that I leave. If I don't leave, the Friend won't come. But if I go, I'll send him to you. ESV 8 And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: MSG 8 "When he comes, he'll expose the error of the godless world's view of sin, righteousness, and judgment: ESV 9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; MSG 9 He'll show them that their refusal to believe in me is their basic sin; ESV 10 concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; MSG 10 that righteousness comes from above, where I am with the Father, out of their sight and control; ESV 11 concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged. MSG 11 that judgment takes place as the ruler of this godless world is brought to trial and convicted. ESV 12 "I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. MSG 12 "I still have many things to tell you, but you can't handle them now. ESV 13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. MSG 13 But when the Friend comes, the Spirit of the Truth, he will take you by the hand and guide you into all the truth there is. He won't draw attention to himself, but will make sense out of what is about to happen and, indeed, out of all that I have done and said. ESV 14 He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. MSG 14 He will honor me; he will take from me and deliver it to you. ESV 15 All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you. MSG 15 Everything the Father has is also mine. That is why I've said, 'He takes from me and delivers to you.' ESV 16 "A little while, and you will see me no longer; and again a little while, and you will see me." MSG 16 "In a day or so you're not going to see me, but then in another day or so you will see me." ESV 17 So some of his disciples said to one another, "What is this that he says to us, 'A little while, and you will not see me, and again a little while, and you will see me'; and, 'because I am going to the Father'?" MSG 17 That stirred up a hornet's nest of questions among the disciples: "What's he talking about: 'In a day or so you're not going to see me, but then in another day or so you will see me'? And, 'Because I'm on my way to the Father'? ESV 18 So they were saying, "What does he mean by 'a little while'? We do not know what he is talking about." MSG 18 What is this 'day or so'? We don't know what he's talking about." ESV 19 Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him, so he said to them, "Is this what you are asking yourselves, what I meant by saying, 'A little while and you will not see me, and again a little while and you will see me'? MSG 19 Jesus knew they were dying to ask him what he meant, so he said, "Are you trying to figure out among yourselves what I meant when I said, 'In a day or so you're not going to see me, but then in another day or so you will see me'? ESV 20 Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy. MSG 20 Then fix this firmly in your minds: You're going to be in deep mourning while the godless world throws a party. You'll be sad, very sad, but your sadness will develop into gladness. ESV 21 When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come, but when she has delivered the baby, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world. MSG 21 "When a woman gives birth, she has a hard time, there's no getting around it. But when the baby is born, there is joy in the birth. This new life in the world wipes out memory of the pain. ESV 22 So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you. MSG 22 The sadness you have right now is similar to that pain, but the coming joy is also similar. When I see you again, you'll be full of joy, and it will be a joy no one can rob from you. ESV 23 In that day you will ask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you. MSG 23 You'll no longer be so full of questions. ESV 24 Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full. MSG 24 Ask in my name, according to my will, and he'll most certainly give it to you. Your joy will be a river overflowing its banks! ESV 25 "I have said these things to you in figures of speech. The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures of speech but will tell you plainly about the Father. MSG 25 "I've used figures of speech in telling you these things. Soon I'll drop the figures and tell you about the Father in plain language. ESV 26 In that day you will ask in my name, and I do not say to you that I will ask the Father on your behalf; MSG 26 Then you can make your requests directly to him in relation to this life I've revealed to you. I won't continue making requests of the Father on your behalf. ESV 27 for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God. MSG 27 I won't need to. Because you've gone out on a limb, committed yourselves to love and trust in me, believing I came directly from the Father, the Father loves you directly. ESV 28 I came from the Father and have come into the world, and now I am leaving the world and going to the Father." MSG 28 First, I left the Father and arrived in the world; now I leave the world and travel to the Father." ESV 29 His disciples said, "Ah, now you are speaking plainly and not using figurative speech! MSG 29 His disciples said, "Finally! You're giving it to us straight, in plain talk - no more figures of speech. ESV 30 Now we know that you know all things and do not need anyone to question you; this is why we believe that you came from God." MSG 30 Now we know that you know everything - it all comes together in you. You won't have to put up with our questions anymore. We're convinced you came from God." ESV 31 Jesus answered them, "Do you now believe? MSG 31 Jesus answered them, "Do you finally believe? ESV 32 Behold, the hour is coming, indeed it has come, when you will be scattered, each to his own home, and will leave me alone. Yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me. MSG 32 In fact, you're about to make a run for it - saving your own skins and abandoning me. But I'm not abandoned. The Father is with me. ESV 33 I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world." MSG 33 I've told you all this so that trusting me, you will be unshakable and assured, deeply at peace. In this godless world you will continue to experience difficulties. But take heart! I've conquered the world."
