Joshua 9

BBE 1 Now on hearing the news of these things, all the kings on the west side of Jordan, in the hill-country and the lowlands and by the Great Sea in front of Lebanon, the Hittites and the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, NIV 1 Now when all the kings west of the Jordan heard about these things—the kings in the hill country, in the western foothills, and along the entire coast of the Mediterranean Sea as far as Lebanon (the kings of the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites)— BBE 2 Came together with one purpose, to make war against Joshua and Israel. NIV 2 they came together to wage war against Joshua and Israel. BBE 3 And the men of Gibeon, hearing what Joshua had done to Jericho and Ai, NIV 3 However, when the people of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and Ai, BBE 4 Acting with deceit, got food together as if for a long journey; and took old food-bags for their asses, and old and cracked wine-skins kept together with cord; NIV 4 they resorted to a ruse: They went as a delegation whose donkeys were loaded with worn-out sacks and old wineskins, cracked and mended. BBE 5 And put old stitched-up shoes on their feet, and old clothing on their backs; and all the food they had with them was dry and broken up. NIV 5 They put worn and patched sandals on their feet and wore old clothes. All the bread of their food supply was dry and moldy. BBE 6 And they came to Joshua to the tent-circle at Gilgal, and said to him and to the men of Israel, We have come from a far country: so now make an agreement with us. NIV 6 Then they went to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal and said to him and the Israelites, “We have come from a distant country; make a treaty with us.” BBE 7 And the men of Israel said to the Hivites, It may be that you are living among us; how then may we make an agreement with you? NIV 7 The Israelites said to the Hivites, “But perhaps you live near us, so how can we make a treaty with you?” BBE 8 And they said to Joshua, We are your servants. Then Joshua said to them, Who are you and where do you come from? NIV 8 “We are your servants,” they said to Joshua. But Joshua asked, “Who are you and where do you come from?” BBE 9 And they said to him, Your servants have come from a very far country, because of the name of the Lord your God: for the story of his great name, and of all he did in Egypt has come to our ears, NIV 9 They answered: “Your servants have come from a very distant country because of the fame of the LORD your God. For we have heard reports of him: all that he did in Egypt, BBE 10 And what he did to the two kings of the Amorites east of Jordan, to Sihon, king of Heshbon, and to Og, king of Bashan, at Ashtaroth. NIV 10 and all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites east of the Jordan—Sihon king of Heshbon, and Og king of Bashan, who reigned in Ashtaroth. BBE 11 So the responsible men and all the people of our country said to us, Take food with you for the journey and go to them, and say to them, We are your servants: so now make an agreement with us. NIV 11 And our elders and all those living in our country said to us, ‘Take provisions for your journey; go and meet them and say to them, “We are your servants; make a treaty with us.” ’ BBE 12 This bread which we have with us for our food, we took warm and new from our houses when starting on our journey to you; but now see, it has become dry and broken up. NIV 12 This bread of ours was warm when we packed it at home on the day we left to come to you. But now see how dry and moldy it is. BBE 13 And these wine-skins were new when we put the wine in them, and now they are cracked as you see; and our clothing and our shoes have become old because of our very long journey here. NIV 13 And these wineskins that we filled were new, but see how cracked they are. And our clothes and sandals are worn out by the very long journey.” BBE 14 And the men took some of their food, without requesting directions from the Lord. NIV 14 The Israelites sampled their provisions but did not inquire of the LORD. BBE 15 So Joshua made peace with them, and made an agreement with them that they were not to be put to death: and the chiefs of the people took an oath to them. NIV 15 Then Joshua made a treaty of peace with them to let them live, and the leaders of the assembly ratified it by oath. BBE 16 Now three days after, when they had made this agreement with them, they had word that these men were their neighbours, living near them. NIV 16 Three days after they made the treaty with the Gibeonites, the Israelites heard that they were neighbors, living near them. BBE 17 And the children of Israel went forward on their journey, and on the third day came to their towns. Now their towns were Gibeon and Chephirah and Beeroth and Kiriath-jearim. NIV 17 So the Israelites set out and on the third day came to their cities: Gibeon, Kephirah, Beeroth and Kiriath Jearim. BBE 18 And the children of Israel did not put them to death, because the chiefs of the people had taken an oath to them by the Lord, the God of Israel. And all the people made an outcry against the chiefs. NIV 18 But the Israelites did not attack them, because the leaders of the assembly had sworn an oath to them by the LORD, the God of Israel. The whole assembly grumbled against the leaders, BBE 19 But all the chiefs said to the people, We have taken an oath to them by the Lord, the God of Israel, and so we may not put our hands on them. NIV 19 but all the leaders answered, “We have given them our oath by the LORD, the God of Israel, and we cannot touch them now. BBE 20 This is what we will do to them: we will not put them to death, for fear that wrath may come on us because of our oath to them. NIV 20 This is what we will do to them: We will let them live, so that God’s wrath will not fall on us for breaking the oath we swore to them.” BBE 21 Keep them living, and let them be servants, cutting wood and getting water for all the people. And all the people did as the chiefs had said to them. NIV 21 They continued, “Let them live, but let them be woodcutters and water carriers in the service of the whole assembly.” So the leaders’ promise to them was kept. BBE 22 Then Joshua sent for them, and said to them, Why have you been false to us, saying, We are very far from you, when you are living among us? NIV 22 Then Joshua summoned the Gibeonites and said, “Why did you deceive us by saying, ‘We live a long way from you,’ while actually you live near us? BBE 23 Now because of this you are cursed, and you will for ever be our servants, cutting wood and getting water for the house of my God. NIV 23 You are now under a curse: You will never be released from service as woodcutters and water carriers for the house of my God.” BBE 24 And, answering Joshua, they said, Because it came to the ears of your servants that the Lord your God had given orders to his servant Moses to give you all this land, and to send destruction on all the people living in it, because of you; so, fearing greatly for our lives because of you, we have done this. NIV 24 They answered Joshua, “Your servants were clearly told how the LORD your God had commanded his servant Moses to give you the whole land and to wipe out all its inhabitants from before you. So we feared for our lives because of you, and that is why we did this. BBE 25 And now we are in your hands: do to us whatever seems good and right to you. NIV 25 We are now in your hands. Do to us whatever seems good and right to you.” BBE 26 So he kept them safe from the children of Israel, and did not let them be put to death. NIV 26 So Joshua saved them from the Israelites, and they did not kill them. BBE 27 And that day Joshua made them servants, cutting wood and getting water for the people and for the altar of the Lord, in the place marked out by him, to this day. NIV 27 That day he made the Gibeonites woodcutters and water carriers for the assembly, to provide for the needs of the altar of the LORD at the place the LORD would choose. And that is what they are to this day.
