KJV 1 Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them. ESV 1 But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they went to the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared. KJV 2 And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre. ESV 12 But Peter rose and ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in, he saw the linen cloths by themselves; and he went home marveling at what had happened. KJV 13 And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs. ESV 16 But their eyes were kept from recognizing him. KJV 17 And he said unto them,What manner of communications are these that ye have one to another, as ye walk, and are sad? ESV 17 And he said to them, "What is this conversation that you are holding with each other as you walk?" And they stood still, looking sad. KJV 18 And the one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering said unto him, Art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which are come to pass there in these days? ESV 18 Then one of them, named Cleopas, answered him, "Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?" KJV 19 And he said unto them,What things? And they said unto him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people: ESV 19 And he said to them, "What things?" And they said to him, "Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, a man who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, KJV 20 And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him. ESV 20 and how our chief priests and rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and crucified him. KJV 21 But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, to day is the third day since these things were done. ESV 21 But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things happened. ESV 24 Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but him they did not see." KJV 25 Then he said unto them,O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken: ESV 25 And he said to them, "O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! KJV 26 Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory? ESV 26 Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?" KJV 27 And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself. ESV 27 And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself. KJV 28 And they drew nigh unto the village, whither they went: and he made as though he would have gone further. ESV 28 So they drew near to the village to which they were going. He acted as if he were going farther, KJV 29 But they constrained him, saying, Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent. And he went in to tarry with them. ESV 29 but they urged him strongly, saying, "Stay with us, for it is toward evening and the day is now far spent." So he went in to stay with them. KJV 30 And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them. ESV 30 When he was at table with them, he took the bread and blessed and broke it and gave it to them. KJV 31 And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight. ESV 31 And their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And he vanished from their sight. KJV 32 And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures? ESV 32 They said to each other, "Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the Scriptures?" KJV 33 And they rose up the same hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were with them, ESV 33 And they rose that same hour and returned to Jerusalem. And they found the eleven and those who were with them gathered together, KJV 34 Saying, The Lord is risen indeed, and hath appeared to Simon. ESV 34 saying, "The Lord has risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!" KJV 35 And they told what things were done in the way, and how he was known of them in breaking of bread. ESV 35 Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he was known to them in the breaking of the bread. KJV 36 And as they thus spake, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and saith unto them,Peace be unto you. ESV 36 As they were talking about these things, Jesus himself stood among them, and said to them, "Peace to you!" KJV 37 But they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they had seen a spirit. ESV 37 But they were startled and frightened and thought they saw a spirit. KJV 38 And he said unto them,Why are ye troubled? and why do thoughts arise in your hearts? ESV 38 And he said to them, "Why are you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your hearts? KJV 39 Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have. ESV 39 See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me, and see. For a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have." KJV 40 And when he had thus spoken, he shewed them his hands and his feet. ESV 40 And when he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet. KJV 41 And while they yet believed not for joy, and wondered, he said unto them,Have ye here any meat? ESV 41 And while they still disbelieved for joy and were marveling, he said to them, "Have you anything here to eat?" KJV 42 And they gave him a piece of a broiled fish, and of an honeycomb. ESV 42 They gave him a piece of broiled fish, KJV 43 And he took it, and did eat before them. ESV 43 and he took it and ate before them. KJV 44 And he said unto them,These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me. ESV 44 Then he said to them, "These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled." KJV 45 Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures, ESV 45 Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, KJV 46 And said unto them,Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: ESV 46 and said to them, "Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, KJV 47 And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. ESV 47 and that repentance and forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. KJV 48 And ye are witnesses of these things. ESV 48 You are witnesses of these things. KJV 49 And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high. ESV 49 And behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high." KJV 50 And he led them out as far as to Bethany, and he lifted up his hands, and blessed them. ESV 50 Then he led them out as far as Bethany, and lifting up his hands he blessed them. KJV 51 And it came to pass, while he blessed them, he was parted from them, and carried up into heaven. ESV 51 While he blessed them, he parted from them and was carried up into heaven. KJV 52 And they worshipped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy: ESV 52 And they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, KJV 53 And were continually in the temple, praising and blessing God. Amen. ESV 53 and were continually in the temple blessing God.
