Mark 1

ESV 1 The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. MSG 1 The good news of Jesus Christ - the Message! - begins here, ESV 2 As it is written in Isaiah the prophet,"Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way, MSG 2 following to the letter the scroll of the prophet Isaiah. Watch closely: I'm sending my preacher ahead of you; He'll make the road smooth for you. ESV 3 the voice of one crying in the wilderness: 'Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight,'" MSG 3 Thunder in the desert! Prepare for God's arrival! Make the road smooth and straight! ESV 4 John appeared, baptizing in the wilderness and proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. MSG 4 John the Baptizer appeared in the wild, preaching a baptism of life-change that leads to forgiveness of sins. ESV 5 And all the country of Judea and all Jerusalem were going out to him and were being baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. MSG 5 People thronged to him from Judea and Jerusalem and, as they confessed their sins, were baptized by him in the Jordan River into a changed life. ESV 6 Now John was clothed with camel's hair and wore a leather belt around his waist and ate locusts and wild honey. MSG 6 John wore a camel-hair habit, tied at the waist with a leather belt. He ate locusts and wild field honey. ESV 7 And he preached, saying, "After me comes he who is mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. MSG 7 As he preached he said, "The real action comes next: The star in this drama, to whom I'm a mere stagehand, will change your life. ESV 8 I have baptized you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit." MSG 8 I'm baptizing you here in the river, turning your old life in for a kingdom life. His baptism - a holy baptism by the Holy Spirit - will change you from the inside out." ESV 9 In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. MSG 9 At this time, Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. ESV 10 And when he came up out of the water, immediately he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. MSG 10 The moment he came out of the water, he saw the sky split open and God's Spirit, looking like a dove, come down on him. ESV 11 And a voice came from heaven, "You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased." MSG 11 Along with the Spirit, a voice: "You are my Son, chosen and marked by my love, pride of my life." ESV 12 The Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness. MSG 12 At once, this same Spirit pushed Jesus out into the wild. ESV 13 And he was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by Satan. And he was with the wild animals, and the angels were ministering to him. MSG 13 For forty wilderness days and nights he was tested by Satan. Wild animals were his companions, and angels took care of him. ESV 14 Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God, MSG 14 After John was arrested, Jesus went to Galilee preaching the Message of God: ESV 15 and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel." MSG 15 "Time's up! God's kingdom is here. Change your life and believe the Message." ESV 16 Passing alongside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew the brother of Simon casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. MSG 16 Passing along the beach of Lake Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew net-fishing. Fishing was their regular work. ESV 17 And Jesus said to them, "Follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men." MSG 17 Jesus said to them, "Come with me. I'll make a new kind of fisherman out of you. I'll show you how to catch men and women instead of perch and bass." ESV 18 And immediately they left their nets and followed him. MSG 18 They didn't ask questions. They dropped their nets and followed. ESV 19 And going on a little farther, he saw James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, who were in their boat mending the nets. MSG 19 A dozen yards or so down the beach, he saw the brothers James and John, Zebedee's sons. They were in the boat, mending their fishnets. ESV 20 And immediately he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants and followed him. MSG 20 Right off, he made the same offer. Immediately, they left their father Zebedee, the boat, and the hired hands, and followed. ESV 21 And they went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath he entered the synagogue and was teaching. MSG 21 Then they entered Capernaum. When the Sabbath arrived, Jesus lost no time in getting to the meeting place. He spent the day there teaching. ESV 22 And they were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one who had authority, and not as the scribes. MSG 22 They were surprised at his teaching - so forthright, so confident - not quibbling and quoting like the religion scholars. ESV 23 And immediately there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit. And he cried out, MSG 23 Suddenly, while still in the meeting place, he was interrupted by a man who was deeply disturbed and yelling out, ESV 24 "What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are--the Holy One of God." MSG 24 "What business do you have here with us, Jesus? Nazarene! I know what you're up to! You're the Holy One of God, and you've come to destroy us!" ESV 25 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Be silent, and come out of him!" MSG 25 Jesus shut him up: "Quiet! Get out of him!" ESV 26 And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying out with a loud voice, came out of him. MSG 26 The afflicting spirit threw the man into spasms, protesting loudly - and got out. ESV 27 And they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, "What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him." MSG 27 Everyone there was incredulous, buzzing with curiosity. "What's going on here? A new teaching that does what it says? He shuts up defiling, demonic spirits and sends them packing!" ESV 28 And at once his fame spread everywhere throughout all the surrounding region of Galilee. MSG 28 News of this traveled fast and was soon all over Galilee. ESV 29 And immediately heleft the synagogue and entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. MSG 29 Directly on leaving the meeting place, they came to Simon and Andrew's house, accompanied by James and John. ESV 30 Now Simon's mother-in-law lay ill with a fever, and immediately they told him about her. MSG 30 Simon's mother-in-law was sick in bed, burning up with fever. They told Jesus. ESV 31 And he came and took her by the hand and lifted her up, and the fever left her, and she began to serve them. MSG 31 He went to her, took her hand, and raised her up. No sooner had the fever left than she was up fixing dinner for them. ESV 32 That evening at sundown they brought to him all who were sick or oppressed by demons. MSG 32 That evening, after the sun was down, they brought sick and evil-afflicted people to him, ESV 33 And the whole city was gathered together at the door. MSG 33 the whole city lined up at his door! ESV 34 And he healed many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons. And he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him. MSG 34 He cured their sick bodies and tormented spirits. Because the demons knew his true identity, he didn't let them say a word. ESV 35 And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he departed and went out to a desolate place, and there he prayed. MSG 35 While it was still night, way before dawn, he got up and went out to a secluded spot and prayed. ESV 36 And Simon and those who were with him searched for him, MSG 36 Simon and those with him went looking for him. ESV 37 and they found him and said to him, "Everyone is looking for you." MSG 37 They found him and said, "Everybody's looking for you." ESV 38 And he said to them, "Let us go on to the next towns, that I may preach there also, for that is why I came out." MSG 38 Jesus said, "Let's go to the rest of the villages so I can preach there also. This is why I've come." ESV 39 And he went throughout all Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and casting out demons. MSG 39 He went to their meeting places all through Galilee, preaching and throwing out the demons. ESV 40 And a leper came to him, imploring him, and kneeling said to him, "If you will, you can make me clean." MSG 40 A leper came to him, begging on his knees, "If you want to, you can cleanse me." ESV 41 Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand and touched him and said to him, "I will; be clean." MSG 41 Deeply moved, Jesus put out his hand, touched him, and said, "I want to. Be clean." ESV 42 And immediately the leprosy left him, and he was made clean. MSG 42 Then and there the leprosy was gone, his skin smooth and healthy. ESV 43 And Jesus sternly charged him and sent him away at once, MSG 43 Jesus dismissed him with strict orders: ESV 44 and said to him, "See that you say nothing to anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded, for a proof to them." MSG 44 "Say nothing to anyone. Take the offering for cleansing that Moses prescribed and present yourself to the priest. This will validate your healing to the people." ESV 45 But he went out and began to talk freely about it, and to spread the news, so that Jesus could no longer openly enter a town, but was out in desolate places, and people were coming to him from every quarter. MSG 45 But as soon as the man was out of earshot, he told everyone he met what had happened, spreading the news all over town. So Jesus kept to out-of-the-way places, no longer able to move freely in and out of the city. But people found him, and came from all over.
