NRSA 6 Now John was clothed with camel's hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. NIV 6 John wore clothing made of camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. NRSA 7 He proclaimed, "The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. NIV 7 And this was his message: “After me comes the one more powerful than I, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. NRSA 8 I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit." NIV 8 I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.” NRSA 9 In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. NIV 9 At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. NRSA 10 And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. NRSA 15 and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news." NIV 15 “The time has come,” he said. “The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!” NRSA 16 As Jesus passed along the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the sea—for they were fishermen. NRSA 17 And Jesus said to them, "Follow me and I will make you fish for people." NIV 17 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” NRSA 18 And immediately they left their nets and followed him. NIV 18 At once they left their nets and followed him. NRSA 19 As he went a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John, who were in their boat mending the nets. NIV 19 When he had gone a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John in a boat, preparing their nets. NRSA 20 Immediately he called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men, and followed him. NIV 20 Without delay he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him. NRSA 21 They went to Capernaum; and when the sabbath came, he entered the synagogue and taught. NIV 21 They went to Capernaum, and when the Sabbath came, Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach. NRSA 22 They were astounded at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes. NIV 22 The people were amazed at his teaching, because he taught them as one who had authority, not as the teachers of the law. NRSA 23 Just then there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit, NIV 23 Just then a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an impure spirit cried out, NRSA 24 and he cried out, "What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are, the Holy One of God." NIV 24 “What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!” NRSA 25 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Be silent, and come out of him!" NIV 25 “Be quiet!” said Jesus sternly. “Come out of him!” NRSA 26 And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying with a loud voice, came out of him. NIV 26 The impure spirit shook the man violently and came out of him with a shriek. NRSA 27 They were all amazed, and they kept on asking one another, "What is this? A new teaching—with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him." NIV 27 The people were all so amazed that they asked each other, “What is this? A new teaching—and with authority! He even gives orders to impure spirits and they obey him.” NRSA 28 At once his fame began to spread throughout the surrounding region of Galilee. NIV 28 News about him spread quickly over the whole region of Galilee. NRSA 29 As soon as they left the synagogue, they entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. NRSA 31 He came and took her by the hand and lifted her up. Then the fever left her, and she began to serve them. NIV 31 So he went to her, took her hand and helped her up. The fever left her and she began to wait on them. NRSA 32 That evening, at sundown, they brought to him all who were sick or possessed with demons. NIV 32 That evening after sunset the people brought to Jesus all the sick and demon-possessed. NRSA 33 And the whole city was gathered around the door. NIV 33 The whole town gathered at the door, NRSA 34 And he cured many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons; and he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him. NIV 34 and Jesus healed many who had various diseases. He also drove out many demons, but he would not let the demons speak because they knew who he was. NRSA 35 In the morning, while it was still very dark, he got up and went out to a deserted place, and there he prayed. NIV 35 Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed. NRSA 36 And Simon and his companions hunted for him. NIV 36 Simon and his companions went to look for him, NRSA 37 When they found him, they said to him, "Everyone is searching for you." NIV 37 and when they found him, they exclaimed: “Everyone is looking for you!” NRSA 38 He answered, "Let us go on to the neighboring towns, so that I may proclaim the message there also; for that is what I came out to do." NIV 38 Jesus replied, “Let us go somewhere else—to the nearby villages—so I can preach there also. That is why I have come.” NRSA 39 And he went throughout Galilee, proclaiming the message in their synagogues and casting out demons. NIV 39 So he traveled throughout Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out demons. NRSA 40 A leper came to him begging him, and kneeling he said to him, "If you choose, you can make me clean." NIV 40 A man with leprosy came to him and begged him on his knees, “If you are willing, you can make me clean.” NRSA 41 Moved with pity, Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, and said to him, "I do choose. Be made clean!" NIV 41 Jesus was indignant. He reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” NRSA 42 Immediately the leprosy left him, and he was made clean. NIV 42 Immediately the leprosy left him and he was cleansed. NRSA 43 After sternly warning him he sent him away at once, NIV 43 Jesus sent him away at once with a strong warning: NRSA 44 saying to him, "See that you say nothing to anyone; but go, show yourself to the priest, and offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded, as a testimony to them." NIV 44 “See that you don’t tell this to anyone. But go, show yourself to the priest and offer the sacrifices that Moses commanded for your cleansing, as a testimony to them.” NRSA 45 But he went out and began to proclaim it freely, and to spread the word, so that Jesus could no longer go into a town openly, but stayed out in the country; and people came to him from every quarter. NIV 45 Instead he went out and began to talk freely, spreading the news. As a result, Jesus could no longer enter a town openly but stayed outside in lonely places. Yet the people still came to him from everywhere.
