KJV 1 The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham. NIV 1 This is the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah the son of David, the son of Abraham: KJV 2 Abraham begat Isaac; and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat Judas and his brethren; NIV 2 Abraham was the father of Isaac, Isaac the father of Jacob, Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers, KJV 3 And Judas begat Phares and Zara of Thamar; and Phares begat Esrom; and Esrom begat Aram; NIV 3 Judah the father of Perez and Zerah, whose mother was Tamar, Perez the father of Hezron, Hezron the father of Ram, KJV 4 And Aram begat Aminadab; and Aminadab begat Naasson; and Naasson begat Salmon; NIV 4 Ram the father of Amminadab, Amminadab the father of Nahshon, Nahshon the father of Salmon, KJV 5 And Salmon begat Booz of Rachab; and Booz begat Obed of Ruth; and Obed begat Jesse; NIV 5 Salmon the father of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab, Boaz the father of Obed, whose mother was Ruth, Obed the father of Jesse, KJV 6 And Jesse begat David the king; and David the king begat Solomon of her that had been the wife of Urias; NIV 6 and Jesse the father of King David. David was the father of Solomon, whose mother had been Uriah’s wife, KJV 7 And Solomon begat Roboam; and Roboam begat Abia; and Abia begat Asa; NIV 7 Solomon the father of Rehoboam, Rehoboam the father of Abijah, Abijah the father of Asa, KJV 8 And Asa begat Josaphat; and Josaphat begat Joram; and Joram begat Ozias; NIV 8 Asa the father of Jehoshaphat, Jehoshaphat the father of Jehoram, Jehoram the father of Uzziah, KJV 9 And Ozias begat Joatham; and Joatham begat Achaz; and Achaz begat Ezekias; NIV 9 Uzziah the father of Jotham, Jotham the father of Ahaz, Ahaz the father of Hezekiah, KJV 10 And Ezekias begat Manasses; and Manasses begat Amon; and Amon begat Josias; NIV 10 Hezekiah the father of Manasseh, Manasseh the father of Amon, Amon the father of Josiah, KJV 11 And Josias begat Jechonias and his brethren, about the time they were carried away to Babylon: NIV 11 and Josiah the father of Jeconiah and his brothers at the time of the exile to Babylon. KJV 12 And after they were brought to Babylon, Jechonias begat Salathiel; and Salathiel begat Zorobabel; NIV 12 After the exile to Babylon: Jeconiah was the father of Shealtiel, Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel, KJV 13 And Zorobabel begat Abiud; and Abiud begat Eliakim; and Eliakim begat Azor; NIV 13 Zerubbabel the father of Abihud, Abihud the father of Eliakim, Eliakim the father of Azor, KJV 14 And Azor begat Sadoc; and Sadoc begat Achim; and Achim begat Eliud; NIV 14 Azor the father of Zadok, Zadok the father of Akim, Akim the father of Elihud, KJV 15 And Eliud begat Eleazar; and Eleazar begat Matthan; and Matthan begat Jacob; NIV 15 Elihud the father of Eleazar, Eleazar the father of Matthan, Matthan the father of Jacob, KJV 16 And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ. NIV 16 and Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, and Mary was the mother of Jesus who is called the Messiah. KJV 17 So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David until the carrying away into Babylon are fourteen generations; and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ are fourteen generations. NIV 17 Thus there were fourteen generations in all from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Messiah. KJV 18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. NIV 18 This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about : His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. KJV 19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily. NIV 19 Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly. KJV 20 But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. NIV 20 But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. KJV 21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. NIV 21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” KJV 22 Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, NIV 22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: KJV 23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us. NIV 23 “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”). KJV 24 Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife: NIV 24 When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. KJV 25 And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS. NIV 25 But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.
