CEB 1 Then Jesus spoke to the crowds and his disciples, NRS 1 Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples, CEB 2 “The legal experts and the Pharisees sit on Moses' seat. NRS 2 "The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses' seat; CEB 3 Therefore, you must take care to do everything they say. But don't do what they do. NRS 3 therefore, do whatever they teach you and follow it; but do not do as they do, for they do not practice what they teach. CEB 4 For they tie together heavy packs that are impossible to carry. They put them on the shoulders of others, but are unwilling to lift a finger to move them. NRS 4 They tie up heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on the shoulders of others; but they themselves are unwilling to lift a finger to move them CEB 5 Everything they do, they do to be noticed by others. They make extra-wide prayer bands for their arms and long tassels for their clothes. NRS 5 They do all their deeds to be seen by others; for they make their phylacteries broad and their fringes long. CEB 6 They love to sit in places of honor at banquets. NRS 6 They love to have the place of honor at banquets and the best seats in the synagogues, CEB 7 They love to be greeted with honor in the markets and to be addressed as ‘Rabbi.' NRS 7 and to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces, and to have people call them rabbi. CEB 8 “But you shouldn't be called Rabbi, because you have one teacher, and all of you are brothers and sisters. NRS 8 But you are not to be called rabbi, for you have one teacher, and you are all students. CEB 9 Don't call anybody on earth your father, because you have one Father, who is heavenly. NRS 9 And call no one your father on earth, for you have one Father—the one in heaven. CEB 10 Don't be called teacher, because Christ is your one teacher. NRS 10 Nor are you to be called instructors, for you have one instructor, the Messiah. CEB 11 But the one who is greatest among you will be your servant. NRS 11 The greatest among you will be your servant. CEB 12 All who lift themselves up will be brought low. But all who make themselves low will be lifted up. NRS 12 All who exalt themselves will be humbled, and all who humble themselves will be exalted. CEB 13 “How terrible it will be for you legal experts and Pharisees! Hypocrites! You shut people out of the kingdom of heaven. You don't enter yourselves, and you won't allow those who want to enter to do so. NRS 13 "But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you lock people out of the kingdom of heaven. For you do not go in yourselves, and when others are going in, you stop them. CEB 15 “How terrible it will be for you, legal experts and Pharisees! Hypocrites! You travel over sea and land to make one convert. But when they've been converted, they become twice the child of hell you are. NRS 15 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you cross sea and land to make a single convert, and you make the new convert twice as much a child of hell as yourselves. CEB 16 “How terrible it will be for you blind guides who say, ‘If people swear by the temple, it's nothing. But if people swear by the gold in the temple, they are obligated to do what they swore.' NRS 16 "Woe to you, blind guides, who say, "Whoever swears by the sanctuary is bound by nothing, but whoever swears by the gold of the sanctuary is bound by the oath.' CEB 17 You foolish and blind people! Which is greater, the gold or the temple that makes the gold holy? NRS 17 You blind fools! For which is greater, the gold or the sanctuary that has made the gold sacred? CEB 18 You say, ‘If people swear by the altar, it's nothing. But if they swear by the gift on the altar, they are obligated to do what they swore.' NRS 18 And you say, "Whoever swears by the altar is bound by nothing, but whoever swears by the gift that is on the altar is bound by the oath.' CEB 19 You blind people! Which is greater, the gift or the altar that makes the gift holy? NRS 19 How blind you are! For which is greater, the gift or the altar that makes the gift sacred CEB 20 Therefore, those who swear by the altar swear by it and by everything that's on it. NRS 20 So whoever swears by the altar, swears by it and by everything on it; CEB 21 Those who swear by the temple swear by it and by everything that's part of it. NRS 21 and whoever swears by the sanctuary, swears by it and by the one who dwells in it CEB 22 Those who swear by heaven swear by God's throne and by the one who sits on it. NRS 22 and whoever swears by heaven, swears by the throne of God and by the one who is seated upon it. CEB 23 “How terrible it will be for you legal experts and Pharisees! Hypocrites! You give to God a tenth of mint, dill, and cumin, but you forget about the more important matters of the Law: justice, peace, and faith. You ought to give a tenth but without forgetting about those more important matters. NRS 23 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint, dill, and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. It is these you ought to have practiced without neglecting the others. CEB 24 You blind guides! You filter out an ant but swallow a camel. NRS 24 You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel! CEB 25 “How terrible it will be for you legal experts and Pharisees! Hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and plate, but inside they are full of violence and pleasure seeking. NRS 25 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and of the plate, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. CEB 26 Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup so that the outside of the cup will be clean too. NRS 26 You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup, so that the outside also may become clean. CEB 27 “How terrible it will be for you legal experts and Pharisees! Hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs. They look beautiful on the outside. But inside they are full of dead bones and all kinds of filth. NRS 27 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which on the outside look beautiful, but inside they are full of the bones of the dead and of all kinds of filth. CEB 28 In the same way you look righteous to people. But inside you are full of pretense and rebellion. NRS 28 So you also on the outside look righteous to others, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness. CEB 29 “How terrible it will be for you legal experts and Pharisees! Hypocrites! You build tombs for the prophets and decorate the graves of the righteous. NRS 29 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you build the tombs of the prophets and decorate the graves of the righteous, CEB 30 You say, ‘If we had lived in our ancestors' days, we wouldn't have joined them in killing the prophets.' NRS 30 and you say, "If we had lived in the days of our ancestors, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.' CEB 31 You testify against yourselves that you are children of those who murdered the prophets. NRS 31 Thus you testify against yourselves that you are descendants of those who murdered the prophets. CEB 32 Go ahead, complete what your ancestors did. NRS 32 Fill up, then, the measure of your ancestors. CEB 33 You snakes! You children of snakes! How will you be able to escape the judgment of hell? NRS 33 You snakes, you brood of vipers! How can you escape being sentenced to hell? CEB 34 Therefore, look, I'm sending you prophets, wise people, and legal experts. Some of them you will kill and crucify. And some you will beat in your synagogues and chase from city to city. NRS 34 Therefore I send you prophets, sages, and scribes, some of whom you will kill and crucify, and some you will flog in your synagogues and pursue from town to town, CEB 35 Therefore, upon you will come all the righteous blood that has been poured out on the earth, from the blood of that righteous man Abel to the blood of Zechariah the son of Barachiah, whom you killed between the temple and the altar. NRS 35 so that upon you may come all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah son of Barachiah, whom you murdered between the sanctuary and the altar. CEB 36 I assure you that all these things will come upon this generation. NRS 36 Truly I tell you, all this will come upon this generation CEB 37 "Jerusalem, Jerusalem! You who kill the prophets and stone those who were sent to you. How often I wanted to gather your people together, just as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings. But you didn't want that. NRS 37 "Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often have I desired to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing! CEB 38 Look, your house is left to you deserted. NRS 38 See, your house is left to you, desolate. CEB 39 I tell you, you won't see me until you say, Blessings on the one who comes in the Lord's name." NRS 39 For I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, "Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.' "
