Psalm 79

CEB 1 The nations have come into your inheritance, God! They've defiled your holy temple. They've made Jerusalem a bunch of ruins. NRS 1 O God, the nations have come into your inheritance; they have defiled your holy temple; they have laid Jerusalem in ruins. CEB 2 They've left your servants' bodies as food for the birds; they've left the flesh of your faithful to the wild animals of the earth. NRS 2 They have given the bodies of your servants to the birds of the air for food, the flesh of your faithful to the wild animals of the earth. CEB 3 They've poured out the blood of the faithful like water all around Jerusalem, and there's no one left to bury them. NRS 3 They have poured out their blood like water all around Jerusalem, and there was no one to bury them. CEB 4 We've become a joke to our neighbors, nothing but objects of ridicule and disapproval to those around us. NRS 4 We have become a taunt to our neighbors, mocked and derided by those around us. CEB 5 How long will you rage, LORD? Forever? How long will your anger burn like fire? NRS 5 How long, O Lord? Will you be angry forever? Will your jealous wrath burn like fire? CEB 6 Pour out your wrath on the nations who don't know you, on the kingdoms that haven't called on your name. NRS 6 Pour out your anger on the nations that do not know you, and on the kingdoms that do not call on your name. CEB 7 They've devoured Jacob and demolished his pasture. NRS 7 For they have devoured Jacob and laid waste his habitation. CEB 8 Don't remember the iniquities of past generations; let your compassion hurry to meet us because we've been brought so low. NRS 8 Do not remember against us the iniquities of our ancestors; let your compassion come speedily to meet us, for we are brought very low. CEB 9 God of our salvation, help us for the glory of your name! Deliver us and cover our sins for the sake of your name! NRS 9 Help us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of your name; deliver us, and forgive our sins, for your name's sake. CEB 10 Why should the nations say, "Where's their God now?" Let vengeance for the spilled blood of your servants be known among the nations before our very eyes! NRS 10 Why should the nations say, "Where is their God?" Let the avenging of the outpoured blood of your servants be known among the nations before our eyes. CEB 11 Let the prisoners' groaning reach you. With your powerful arm spare those who are destined to die. NRS 11 Let the groans of the prisoners come before you; according to your great power preserve those doomed to die. CEB 12 Pay back our neighbors seven times over, right where it hurts, for the insults they used on you, Lord. NRS 12 Return sevenfold into the bosom of our neighbors the taunts with which they taunted you, O Lord! CEB 13 We are, after all, your people and the sheep of your very own pasture. We will give you thanks forever; we will proclaim your praises from one generation to the next. NRS 13 Then we your people, the flock of your pasture, will give thanks to you forever; from generation to generation we will recount your praise.
