Psalm 79

NAS 1 O God, the nations have invaded Your inheritance; They have defiled Your holy temple; They have laid Jerusalem in ruins. NIV 1 O God, the nations have invaded your inheritance; they have defiled your holy temple, they have reduced Jerusalem to rubble. NAS 2 They have given the dead bodies of Your servants for food to the birds of the heavens, The flesh of Your godly ones to the beasts of the earth. NIV 2 They have left the dead bodies of your servants as food for the birds of the sky, the flesh of your own people for the animals of the wild. NAS 3 They have poured out their blood like water round about Jerusalem; And there was no one to bury them. NIV 3 They have poured out blood like water all around Jerusalem, and there is no one to bury the dead. NAS 4 We have become a reproach to our neighbors, A scoffing and derision to those around us. NIV 4 We are objects of contempt to our neighbors, of scorn and derision to those around us. NAS 5 How long, O LORD ? Will You be angry forever? Will Your jealousy burn like fire? NIV 5 How long, LORD? Will you be angry forever? How long will your jealousy burn like fire? NAS 6 Pour out Your wrath upon the nations which do not know You, And upon the kingdoms which do not call upon Your name. NIV 6 Pour out your wrath on the nations that do not acknowledge you, on the kingdoms that do not call on your name; NAS 7 For they have devoured Jacob And laid waste his habitation. NIV 7 for they have devoured Jacob and devastated his homeland. NAS 8 Do not remember the iniquities of our forefathers against us; Let Your compassion come quickly to meet us, For we are brought very low. NIV 8 Do not hold against us the sins of past generations; may your mercy come quickly to meet us, for we are in desperate need. NAS 9 Help us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of Your name; And deliver us and forgive our sins for Your name's sake. NIV 9 Help us, God our Savior, for the glory of your name; deliver us and forgive our sins for your name’s sake. NAS 10 Why should the nations say, "Where is their God?" Let there be known among the nations in our sight, Vengeance for the blood of Your servants which has been shed. NIV 10 Why should the nations say, “Where is their God?” Before our eyes, make known among the nations that you avenge the outpoured blood of your servants. NAS 11 Let the groaning of the prisoner come before You; According to the greatness of Your power preserve those who are doomed to die. NIV 11 May the groans of the prisoners come before you; with your strong arm preserve those condemned to die. NAS 12 And return to our neighbors sevenfold into their bosom The reproach with which they have reproached You, O Lord . NIV 12 Pay back into the laps of our neighbors seven times the contempt they have hurled at you, Lord. NAS 13 So we Your people and the sheep of Your pasture Will give thanks to You forever; To all generations we will tell of Your praise. NIV 13 Then we your people, the sheep of your pasture, will praise you forever; from generation to generation we will proclaim your praise.
