Zephaniah 3

NCV 1 How terrible for the wicked, stubborn city of Jerusalem, which hurts its own people. NIV 1 Woe to the city of oppressors, rebellious and defiled! NCV 2 It obeys no voice; it can't be taught to do right. It doesn't trust the Lord; it doesn't worship its God. NIV 2 She obeys no one, she accepts no correction. She does not trust in the LORD, she does not draw near to her God. NCV 3 Its officers are like roaring lions. Its rulers are like hungry wolves that attack in the evening, and in the morning nothing is left of those they attacked. NIV 3 Her officials within her are roaring lions; her rulers are evening wolves, who leave nothing for the morning. NCV 4 Its prophets are proud; they are people who cannot be trusted. Its priests don't respect holy things; they break God's teachings. NIV 4 Her prophets are unprincipled; they are treacherous people. Her priests profane the sanctuary and do violence to the law. NCV 5 But the Lord is good, and he is there in that city. He does no wrong. Every morning he governs the people fairly; every day he can be trusted. But evil people are not ashamed of what they do. NIV 5 The LORD within her is righteous; he does no wrong. Morning by morning he dispenses his justice, and every new day he does not fail, yet the unrighteous know no shame. NCV 6 "I have destroyed nations; their towers were ruined. I made their streets empty so no one goes there anymore. Their cities are ruined; no one lives there at all. NIV 6 “I have destroyed nations; their strongholds are demolished. I have left their streets deserted, with no one passing through. Their cities are laid waste; they are deserted and empty. NCV 7 I said, 'Surely now Jerusalem will respect me and will accept my teaching.' Then the place where they lived would not be destroyed, and I would not have to punish them. But they were still eager to do evil in everything they did. NIV 7 Of Jerusalem I thought, ‘Surely you will fear me and accept correction!’ Then her place of refuge would not be destroyed, nor all my punishments come upon her. But they were still eager to act corruptly in all they did. NCV 8 Just wait," says the Lord. "Some day I will stand up as a witness. I have decided that I will gather nations and assemble kingdoms. I will pour out my anger on them, all my strong anger. My anger will be like fire that will burn up the whole world. NIV 8 Therefore wait for me,” declares the LORD, “for the day I will stand up to testify.I have decided to assemble the nations, to gather the kingdoms and to pour out my wrath on them— all my fierce anger. The whole world will be consumed by the fire of my jealous anger. NCV 9 "Then I will give the people of all nations pure speech so that all of them will speak the name of the Lord and worship me together. NIV 9 “Then I will purify the lips of the peoples, that all of them may call on the name of the LORDand serve him shoulder to shoulder. NCV 10 People will come from where the Nile River begins; my scattered people will come with gifts for me. NIV 10 From beyond the rivers of Cush my worshipers, my scattered people, will bring me offerings. NCV 11 Then Jerusalem will not be ashamed of the wrongs done against me, because I will remove from this city those who like to brag; there will never be any more proud people on my holy mountain in Jerusalem. NIV 11 On that day you, Jerusalem, will not be put to shame for all the wrongs you have done to me, because I will remove from you your arrogant boasters. Never again will you be haughty on my holy hill. NCV 12 But I will leave in the city the humble and those who are not proud, and they will trust in the Lord. NIV 12 But I will leave within you the meek and humble. The remnant of Israel will trust in the name of the LORD. NCV 13 Those who are left alive in Israel won't do wrong or tell lies; they won't trick people with their words. They will eat and lie down with no one to make them afraid." NIV 13 They will do no wrong; they will tell no lies. A deceitful tongue will not be found in their mouths. They will eat and lie down and no one will make them afraid.” NCV 14 Sing, Jerusalem. Israel, shout for joy! Jerusalem, be happy and rejoice with all your heart. NIV 14 Sing, Daughter Zion; shout aloud, Israel! Be glad and rejoice with all your heart, Daughter Jerusalem! NCV 15 The Lord has stopped punishing you; he has sent your enemies away. The King of Israel, the Lord, is with you; you will never again be afraid of being harmed. NIV 15 The LORD has taken away your punishment, he has turned back your enemy. The LORD, the King of Israel, is with you; never again will you fear any harm. NCV 16 On that day Jerusalem will be told, "Don't be afraid, city of Jerusalem. Don't give up. NIV 16 On that day they will say to Jerusalem, “Do not fear, Zion; do not let your hands hang limp. NCV 17 The Lord your God is with you; the mighty One will save you. He will rejoice over you. You will rest in his love; he will sing and be joyful about you." NIV 17 The LORD your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing.” NCV 18 "I will take away the sadness planned for you, which would have made you very ashamed. NIV 18 “I will remove from you all who mourn over the loss of your appointed festivals, which is a burden and reproach for you. NCV 19 At that time I will punish all those who harmed you. I will save my people who cannot walk and gather my people who have been thrown out. I will give them praise and honor in every place where they were shamed. NIV 19 At that time I will deal with all who oppressed you. I will rescue the lame; I will gather the exiles. I will give them praise and honor in every land where they have suffered shame. NCV 20 At that time I will gather you; at that time I will bring you back home. I will give you honor and praise from people everywhere when I make things go well again for you, as you will see with your own eyes," says the Lord. NIV 20 At that time I will gather you; at that time I will bring you home. I will give you honor and praise among all the peoples of the earth when I restore your fortunesbefore your very eyes,” says the LORD..
